My fall-foliage photos always seem out of season compared with the rest\nof the world, Kyoto not getting its color until mid November after much of\nthe Northern Hemisphere's autumn has passed. In line with<\/span> that, this post\nfeatures an out-of-season element in an out-of-season photo: cherry\nblossoms in late November.<\/p>\n\n

Five minutes away from my place, buried back in the mountains of\neastern Kyoto, is the small Himukai Shrine, featured in “Thatched Roofs and Colored\nCanopies<\/a>” and “Changing Seasons, Changing Lenses<\/a>” earlier this month. Among\nthe spectacular colors I didn't<\/span> even notice the lone blooming<\/i> cherry\ntree off to one side until it was pointed out to me.<\/p>\n\n

Its decidedly delicate presence can be seen, if given the proper\nattention, at the far left of this shot from the parking lot:<\/p>\n\n

I knew that cherry can\nbloom in January<\/a>.... in Okinawa, where Spring arrives after Summer\nhasn't really left. I never<\/span> knew that there is a variety<\/span> of cherry blossom\nthat blooms in the fall\/winter, but there you have it.<\/p>\n\n

Despite the Japanese name \u5341\u6708\u685c (jyuugatuzakura<\/i>, “October\nSakura”), they apparently bloom through January, and again for a short<\/span> time\nin the Spring (when the rest of the cherry blossoms boom). I'd never<\/span> heard\nof such a thing.<\/span> According to this page<\/a>, the scientific\nname is Prunus subhirtella cv. Autumnalis<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
