So, the other day, I posted<\/span> the above photo without a title,<\/span> soliciting captions<\/a>.\nAlmost two dozen suggestions later (all of which were kept hidden until\nafter I posted<\/span> this followup, so as not to influence subsequent suggestions)\nand the overwhelming theme is “layers” and\n“strata”.<\/p>\n\n

Of course, the wonderful banding of different colors and textures is\nwhat prompted me to take the photo in the first place. It took it<\/span> from my\nbalcony, looking across the little stream next to our place to the path on\nthe other side. I've lived here for four years and never noticed it in this\nway before.<\/p>\n\n

After I did notice it and grabbed the camera, I became<\/span> more struck by\nthe difference of the one line to the rest, the leaves accumulated on the\nledge that rises from left to right. This struck me as a connection<\/span> between\nthe layers above and below, so I thought<\/span> about captions such as\n“Bridging the Gap<\/b>” and such. But nothing<\/span> I thought<\/span> of really\ncaptured what I wanted,<\/span> so I asked<\/span> a friend,<\/span> William Maton, via Yahoo\nMessenger what caption he'd put on it....<\/p>\n\n

His response, “Sea, Forest, and Mountains<\/b>” was on a whole<\/span>\ndifferent level than what I was<\/span> thinking. Wondering whether anyone else\nwould have a completely<\/span> different direction, I posted<\/span> the photo sans\ncaption or explanation. I'm gratified<\/span> at the response, and it was fun.\nThanks for playing. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n

I finally went with “Going Up<\/b>” because in the end I saw<\/span> the\nline of leaves rising<\/i> more than I saw<\/span> it bridging<\/i>, though\nthose looking at the photo from right to left might not quite see it that\nway.<\/p>\n\n

As a bonus,<\/span> I got my<\/span> desktop-background\nimage<\/a> machinery working again – I installed<\/span> Photoshop on my new machine<\/a> – so the\ncopy above has links to desktop-background sizes.<\/p>\n\n

I have a version with an extra layer, but it struck me better in a\nlandscape<\/span> orientation that emphasized the banding. But FWIW, here's the\nportrait mode...<\/p>\n\n

I also toyed with a different theme that required a bit<\/span> of timing to get right....<\/p>\n\n

It's somewhat surprising how such a small<\/span> thing — a touch<\/span> of the\nhuman element — can change a picture<\/span> so much. I was actually<\/span> hoping\nfor more impact, but I still<\/span> like the result. It sort of<\/span> along the same\nlines as this\nshot<\/a> from “Artsy Fartsy in Kyoto at f<\/span>\/1.2<\/a>”.<\/p>\n\n

And for good measure, here's a shot taken at about the same time that I\nsorta<\/span>' like, even though nothing is in focus...<\/p>\n\n
