During the short conversation, <span class='nobr'>I found<\/span> that the oldest item in the gardens dates from <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kamakura_period\">the Kamakura era<\/a>\n(1185-1333), when, he told us, stone carving (culture or technology, <span class='nobr'>I'm not sure<\/span>) was introduced to Japan from Korea. Most items, though, <span class='nobr'>I took it<\/span>,\nwere produced by him and his forefathers, he being the fifth generation of his\nfamily to work at this site.<\/p>\n\n<p>The gardens are more of a storage area than anything else. Stone\ncarvings like this look best when they are not shiny and new, so storing\nthem outside gives them the desirable weathered patina appropriate to their\nage. Having convenient paths among the items allows visitors like us to\nenjoy them, and also acts like <span class='nobr'>a showroom<\/span> in <span class='nobr'>a manner<\/span> of speaking. But it's\nnot like they have <span class='nobr'>a storefront<\/span> with <span class='nobr'>a lot<\/span> of customers stopping by &mdash;\nthey have no sign or storefront or anything visible from the street that\nidentifies the site. <span class='nobr'>I gingerly<\/span> asked about prices, to which <span class='nobr'>I got<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a vague<\/span>\n&#8220;expensive&#8221; reply. <span class='nobr'>I guess<\/span> if you have to ask....<\/p>\n\n<p>They are pretty much the only place in Japan that does this kind of hand\ncarving exclusively, and are the go-to solution when priceless stone\ntreasures need restoration or repair work.<\/p>\n\n<p>The area of Kyoto they're in (which wasn't Kyoto back then) is called\n<i>kitashirakawa<\/i> (&#8220;Northern White River&#8221;, incidentally the same small\nriver that flows by my place <span class='nobr'>a couple<\/span> of miles downstream). <span class='nobr'>It used to<\/span> have\nmany stone-carving sites, but now there are apparently only three, and no others\nthat do hand-carving work.<\/p>\n\n<p>The stone in the area was somehow special, but over the years had\nsomehow been depleted &mdash; I'm not sure exactly what that means &mdash;\nbut next to the workshop they have big moss-covered stacks of it, the last\nremaining stock in existence. Each\npiece was different, so one could spend hours on each....<\/p>\n\n<p style='margin-top:30px'>Anyway, back to The Crossroads. Paul is\nlooking at the stone lantern between him and the camera &mdash; but the\nbottom half looks as if <span class='nobr'>a shrunken<\/span> version of Paul has been placed standing\ndirectly beside the stone lantern.<\/p>\n\n<p>Even though I <i>know<\/i> that the base of the stone lantern extends\nquite <span class='nobr'>a bit<\/span> out below the frame, and that the tuft of grass at its base is\nreally quite tall, my brain just can't quite put it all together. Freaky. <span class='nobr'>By the way<\/span>, congratulations for actually reading this far... <span class='nobr'>I don't<\/span> think even\nmy mom will actually read the text this far.
