In “Nishimura Stone Lanterns: the Workshop<\/a>” I introduced<\/span> a\nstone<\/span>-carver workshop in the Kitashirakawa area of Kyoto that I came<\/span> across\nlast week. I visited<\/span> again the other day, stopping first at the workshop to\nrequest permission to visit their amazing back\ngarden<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

The workshop is open to the street, and upon walking up, Paul Barr<\/a> and I found<\/span>\nnone other than Daizo Nishimura<\/b>, the 5th-generation\nstonecarver\/owner at work preparing a stone<\/span> for carving. I took the<\/span> photo\nabove before he noticed us.<\/p>\n\n

Upon seeing us, he immediately stopped his work to chat with us. I felt bad<\/span> about interrupting his work, so kept my chat to a minimum,<\/span> but got\npermission to visit the gardens. But as we<\/span> left, he returned to work, which\nwas compelling enough of a sight<\/span> that we hung around to watch and take\npictures.<\/p>\n\n

Noticing that we still there, he invited us in to take pictures, and\ncheerfully engaged me in conversation as he went about his work.<\/p>\n\n

As he started carving, fine shards of granite started flying\neverywhere, including into my eyes. I jumped<\/span> back and asked (in Japanese)\n“wow, don't you ever get this stuff in your eyes while you work?!<\/i>”\nto which he replied “Yup, sure do, but you can't see well if you wear\nglasses...<\/i>”<\/p>\n\n

His dad (72-year-old Kenzo Nishimura) still works a full<\/span> day, but was\nbusy with a project<\/span> at a location<\/span> down the street, so wasn't there at the\ntime. There were, however, two young, non-family apprentices at work on\nvarious projects, and the sound of three hammer pounding away at chisels\nfilled the air as Paul and I ventured<\/span> toward the back garden....<\/p>\n\n
