Anthony visited his friend Monet<\/a> today. She lives<\/span> up\nin Hieidaira, a community<\/span> in the mountains between here (Kyoto) and Otsu. The drive<\/span> up the twisty crowded mountain road was breathtaking, and while\nthey played I returned<\/span> for a few<\/span> photos.<\/p>\n\n

I stopped at a few places along the short (5-mile) route, but there were\nway too many colors to fit in one post; these are just a few<\/span> shots from the\nfirst place I stopped.<\/span>...<\/p>\n\n

Fall colors at a temple or shrine in the city can be really pretty,\nespecially at a big<\/span> place that gives you opportunities to find interesting\nangles (such as last week's colorful visit to the Eikando\nTemple<\/a>), but I'm pretty sure that the trees that line the tiny\nShirakawa River and the road as they both wind up the mountain are native\ngrowth.... part of a small<\/span> percent of the mountains not taken over by tree\nfarming.<\/p>\n\n

The range of colors at most any spot is breathtaking. Nothing is\narranged.... it's just as nature haphazardly put it.<\/p>\n\n

This is all visible just off the road, which itself runs next to a small<\/span>\nriver at the bottom of a ravine<\/span> that twists down the mountain. The road itself<\/span> is horrendously ugly.... standard-issue small-mountain road, with\nbeat up guard rails, lots of utility poles, piles of garbage by the side of\nthe road, etc.<\/p>\n\n

I found one thing I certainly did not expect to find.....<\/p>\n\n

Piled along one stretch of road, perched precariously over the river,\nwere piles and piles of cut and carved stone, as if a large<\/span> monument of\nsome sort had been meticulously dismantled, each piece painstakingly readied\nfor transport, carefully brought to the this site, then, in the dead of\nnight when no one was looking, haphazardly jettisoned from the truck\ninto a big<\/span> pile.<\/p>\n\n
