Returning from an errand today, I liked<\/span> how the late-afternoon brisk\nautumn sun was hitting some old cozy (read “dilapidated”) Machiya<\/a> houses near my\nplace, so I grabbed<\/span> the camera and headed out for a short<\/span> photo-hunt stroll.<\/p>\n\n

I'll share the pictures of the houses another day; in this post, just a\nfew<\/span> “mood” pictures from the day, which was sunny and brisk, much nicer\nthan the overcast gloom of yesterday (which was photogenic<\/a>\nnevertheless).<\/p>\n\n

The picture above was the last I took<\/span> of the day, just as I was<\/span>\nreturning home, of two ladies (likely a girl<\/span> and her mom) about to get into\na taxi<\/span> that was doing a U-turn just out of frame to pick them up. I was immediately<\/span>\nstruck by their beautiful kimono, their obvious class (compare against\nthe\nlow-class garish display<\/a>\nor the unbridled cuteness<\/a>\nseen in other posts), and the splash of color provided by the background.<\/p>\n\n

Unfortunately, with all the foot traffic going past and the taxi about\nto pull in frame, I didn't<\/span> have much time to set up and execute a shot,<\/span> and\nthe picture above was the best I could<\/span> do (with, unfortunately, the girl\nhaving noticed me and my big lens, just starting to form a perplexed<\/span> “why\nis someone taking pictures of us?” look on her face).<\/p>\n\n

But I really like their seasonal kimono, so here's the only other shot I\ngot,<\/span> which shows them a bit<\/span> better.<\/p>\n\n

As I walked by them heading into my place and they into their taxi, the\ngirl, still with a perplexed<\/span> look on her face, I smiled,<\/span> and the girl gave\na tentative<\/span> little “I don't<\/span> know what's going on” wave. It was sort<\/span> of\nfunny. I would<\/span> have liked to take a proper<\/span> portrait.<\/p>\n\n

The little posts sticking up in the middle of the river have slots in\nthem, and many years ago, apparently, the townsfolk used to put boards in\nthem to block the stream, creating a public<\/span> swimming pool for the kids.\nThis practice apparently ceased a few<\/span> generations ago after some kind of\nfatal accident, but vestiges of the practice remain.<\/p>\n\n
