Having felt cooped up in the house for the last week, we took an\nimpromptu drive into the mountains north of Kyoto yesterday, stopping by a\nbakery<\/span> on the way to pick up a snack.<\/span> Not long after<\/span> entering the\nmountains, we stopped off the road to eat at a location<\/span> that happened to be\nnear the Hakuryuuen\nGarden<\/a>, which I posted<\/span> about in some detail a couple<\/span> of months ago.<\/p>\n\n

As before, it was closed off with a fence<\/span> across the entrance, right at\nthe road shoulder....<\/p>\n\n

It was overcast with little spritzes of rain, yet my D700 wanted to\noverexpose everything. I had to<\/span> use up to -2EV exposure compensation to\npull it in line. I don't<\/span> get it.<\/p>\n\n

I chatted with one of the caretakers, who confirmed apologetically that\nit's never open to the public. As I described<\/span> in the post two\nmonths ago<\/a> with words and a photo,<\/span> the Eizan Train\nline's “Fall Foliage Tunnel” lightup<\/a> goes right past the southern edge\nof the garden. It's quite<\/span> pretty. I saw the<\/span> train go by as I was<\/span> taking\nthese photos.<\/p>\n\n

I also saw a jogger go by just as I was<\/span> first getting out of the car to walk across a bridge<\/span>\nto the road in front of the garden...<\/p>\n\n

About this post's lead photo, with the in-focus elements being only some\noverhanging leaves in the foreground, and with the background out of focus\nand left to your imagination to make complete, it's an effect that I'm\nincreasingly drawn to, but doesn't quite work here as well as I hoped.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

I'd put it to best effect in July with my Sanzen Temple “Serenity”\nDesktop Background<\/a>, which I still<\/span> very much like, and I used<\/span> it as well\ntwo weeks in the first photo of Starting to See Splashes of\nFall Colors in Kyoto<\/a>, but in today's photo, the scene behind the\nin-focus foreground turns out to be too busy to allow the leaves to stand\nout as clearly and sharply as I hoped.<\/span> I tried<\/span> to salvage it a bit<\/span> in\nLightroom by applying to the in-focus leaves a touch<\/span> of local corrections\n(sharpening and positive clarity).<\/p>\n\n

Going the other direction, I used just<\/span> a bit<\/span> of negative clarity<\/a> on most\nof the final photo to give a slightly<\/span> softer overall feeling.... a much<\/span>\nmore subtle version of the over-the-top effect used in (for example) the\nfirst photo of Cherry\nBlossoms in the Rain at the Heian Shrine, Part 2<\/i><\/a>, the “Positively\nGlowing<\/a>” photo from a cherry<\/span>-blossom preview earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
