{"id":1346,"date":"2009-11-01T21:53:43","date_gmt":"2009-11-01T12:53:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2009-11-01\/1346"},"modified":"2009-11-01T21:53:43","modified_gmt":"2009-11-01T12:53:43","slug":"interactive-map-of-my-blog-photos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2009-11-01\/1346","title":{"rendered":"Interactive Map of My Blog Photos"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<div class='resize_warning' id='arw1346'>\n<b>NOTE<\/b>: Images with an <img class='raw' width='19' height='18' src='\/i\/s\/red_zoomup.gif'\/> icon next to them have been artificially shrunk to better fit your screen; click the icon to restore them, in place, to their regular size.\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>I think my computer senses that <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2009-10-28\/1344\" class='quiet'>I'm about to\nditch it<\/a> because we came back from <span class='nobr'>a short<\/span> trip and <span class='nobr'>I loaded<\/span> new\nphotos, but the graphics-card hardware acceleration doesn't seem to work\nanymore, turning my use of Lightroom from <span class='nobr'>a zippy<\/span>-responsive experience to\n<span class='nobr'>a painful,<\/span> laggy frustration.<\/p>\n\n<div style='float:right; margin-top:0; margin-right:0; margin-left:1em;\nmargin-bottom:1em'><a href=\"\/blog\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/s\/PhotoMapScreenshot.png\" width=\"331\" height=\"550\"\nclass=\"raw\"\nid=\"iPhotoMapScreenshot\"\nindexhint=\"top\"\/><\/a><\/div>\n\n<p>So, no new photos for a while... <span class='nobr'>I ended<\/span> up ordering <span class='nobr'>a Mac<\/span> Pro, and\ncurrently have 8TB of disk sitting in <span class='nobr'>a box<\/span> by my desk waiting for the Mac\nto arrive.<\/p>\n\n<p>So, today I'll post about a new addition to my blog that <span class='nobr'>I quietly<\/span> added\n<span class='nobr'>a week<\/span> ago, highlighted with the red arrow in the screenshot at right, of\nmy blog's home page: an <a href=\"\/blog\/map\"\nclass='quiet'>interactive Google Map overlaid with photos from my\nblog<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>The default location is Kyoto where <span class='nobr'>I live,<\/span> but like any Google map, you\ncan visit anywhere in the world, and if I've posted geoencoded photos on my\nblog from that part of the world, they'll start to show up. When you're\nzoomed way out to the country or state or city level, you'll see only <span class='nobr'>a few<\/span>\nif there are any at all, but as you zoom in, more will pop up.<\/p>\n\n<p>Most of the 4,000+ geoencoded photos are in Japan, but at the moment there are also some\nin\nMalaysia,\n<a class='quiet' href=\"\/blog\/map#lat=37.393263;lon=-121.941703;z=11\">California<\/a>,\n<a class='quiet' href=\"\/blog\/map#lat=45.709703;lon=-122.355750;z=9\">Oregon<\/a>,\n<a class='quiet' href=\"\/blog\/map#lat=49.747267;lon=-123.149513;z=8\">British Columbia<\/a>,\nand\n<a href=\"\/blog\/map#lat=41.233077;lon=-81.317695;z=9\" class='quiet'>Ohio<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>Clicking on a thumbnail brings up <span class='nobr'>a larger<\/span> version, the date it was\ntaken, and info about the blog post it was from. Double-clicking zooms you\nup to the immediate area.<\/p>\n\n<p>Sometimes you have to zoom all the way in to see multiple pictures\nbecause they're taken in the same immediate vicinity, and sometimes you\nhave to switch to the satellite view to zoom in even further. Often I'll\nhave multiple photos taken from the exact same spot, but only one can be\nshown. Clicking on it shows <span class='nobr'>a link<\/span> under the larger version that pops up,\nalong the lines of &#8220;there are 20 other photos within 100m of this one&#8221;;\nclicking on it jumps over to my blog's <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/proximity\/\" class='quiet'>photo proximity\nsearch<\/a> showing all photos in the immediate area.<\/p>\n\n<p>I figure that this will of most interest to the same set of users that\nfind my blog most interesting, which is to say, me. <span class='nobr'>But perhaps<\/span> the photo\nmap might be useful for someone planning <span class='nobr'>a visit<\/span> to Kyoto, or wanting to do\nsome virtual sightseeing.<\/p>\n\n<p>Other ways to browse all my blog-posted photos &ndash; not just\ngeoencoded ones &ndash; include the <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/photostream\/\" class='quiet'>Prettiest Blog\nPhotos<\/a> link (highlighted by the green arrow in the screenshot), which\nbrings up <span class='nobr'>a page<\/span> of themes (Japan, Autumn, etc.), each of which brings up <span class='nobr'>a\nscreen<\/span> full of hopefully-pretty pictures to browse.<\/p>\n\n<p>For more of a firehose effect, check out the yearly index of photos\n(highlighted by the blue arrow in the screenshot). <span class='nobr'>At this point<\/span> the page\nfor 2009 has <span class='nobr'>a grid<\/span> of 1,605 thumbnails, <span class='nobr'>a portion<\/span> from September which\nlooks like this:<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic tight'>\n<a href=\"\/blog\/photos-2009\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/s\/BlogPhotoGrid.png\" width=\"625\" height=\"491\"\nclass=\"raw\"\nid=\"iBlogPhotoGrid\"\/><\/a>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>It'll probably take a while to load the first time. \ud83d\ude42 &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Clicking on <span class='nobr'>a\nthumbnail<\/span> brings you to the associated post.<\/p>\n\n<p>I build this stuff mostly for myself, but I've put up links in case\nanyone else might find it interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I think my computer senses that I'm about to ditch it because we came back from a short trip and I loaded new photos, but the graphics-card hardware acceleration doesn't seem to work anymore, turning my use of Lightroom from a zippy-responsive experience to a painful, laggy frustration.<\/p> <p>So, no new photos for a while...
