So after getting dressed up<\/a> and then taking care of final\npreparations<\/a>, we headed into the Heian Shrine for Anthony's shichi-go-san<\/i><\/a> long-and-healthy-life blessing\nevent.<\/p>\n\n\n

Most people go in the small entrances on either side, but we thought to\ntake a group<\/span> photo in the exaggeratedly large main entrance (just out of\nframe to the left in the shot above), but it turns out that the only shot I\ngot<\/span> was the one that opens this post, with Anthony standing there looking\nout at the vast (and shockingly empty) courtyard.<\/p>\n\n

It's the same courtyard where an annual festival has people throwing\nbeans<\/a> and a seriously<\/span> intense burn<\/a>. It's also the<\/span> same courtyard\nwhere I got<\/span> one of my favorite photos of all time<\/a>, among many other\nthings, as any of the “nearby photos” links under these pictures\nillustrates. <\/p>\n\n

The lead photo of this post is one of the first in months for which I've\nhad to go to Photoshop. I had underexposed<\/span> Anthony and gotten a bit<\/span> of\nGrandpa in the shot (where “a bit<\/span>” means “his entire body standing at the\nbottom of the steps”), but was able to fix all that well enough in Adobe\nLightroom where I center<\/span> my workflow, but the thing I couldn't<\/span> do in\nLightroom was to fix some crookedness to the shot without cutting off\nAnthony's feet. One of my<\/span> bad habit is that I often<\/span> don't hold the camera\nlevel, which means that I often<\/span> have to rotate photos slightly during post\nprocessing. Rotation in Lightroom always make the frame smaller, but in\nthis case there was absolutely no room for that (without cutting off his\nfeet), so after fixing other things in Lightroom, I moved<\/span> to Photoshop\nwhere I could<\/span> rotate without making the frame smaller. (This caused a wedge<\/span>\nof “nothingness” to appear in the floor on one side where it had been\nrotated into the frame, but I fixed<\/span> that by filling in with floor copied\nfrom the other side.)<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, I'm happy<\/span> with the result.<\/p>\n\n

So, we made our way across the courtyard to the big main building.\nPhotography is not allowed inside, but I have<\/span> this shot of two other kids\nheading in for the event...<\/p>\n\n

Twenty minutes later we were out, and Anthony had a bag<\/span> of candy and a\nfake<\/span> sprig representing, I suppose,<\/span> healthy growth.<\/p>\n\n

The Heian Shrine is surrounded by city on all sides, but you'd never\nguess it from the photo above. I really<\/span> like it. I've never been inside the\nbuilding in the background, but I believe<\/span> it's where a lot<\/span> of the wedding\nstuff goes one. One of my<\/span> first blog posts was of some of its\nlanterns<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

When I took the photo above, there was yet another shrine building to my\nback. I called<\/span> everyone over to its shade, set up a nice<\/span> photo, then\nenlisted the help of the first person I saw<\/span> nearby with an SLR (a tourist<\/span>\nfrom France, it turns out) to use my camera to take a family<\/span> shot:<\/p>\n\n

Geez, I look fat<\/span>. I'm not that<\/span> fat. Really. Must be a defective<\/span> lens. I need a<\/span> new lens. Yes, I shall<\/span> buy a new<\/span> one (or three!) forthwith. Problem solved.<\/p>\n\n
