Anthony was looking forward to his shichi-go-san<\/i><\/a> wishes-for-a-long-life children's\nblessing event because he had been assured that it involved candy and toys. We were looking<\/span> forward to it because we knew he'd look so cute, as the Anthony in a\nHakama<\/span> picture<\/a> I posted<\/span> the other day bore out.<\/p>\n\n

It's just a short walk to the shrine, and it was a wonderful<\/span> day, so we\nheaded out with Fumie's folks...<\/p>\n\n

The shrine does a brisk business as a venue<\/span> for marriage ceremonies and\nphoto shoots. A friend<\/span> of a friend<\/span> got married\nhere<\/a> a few<\/span> years ago, and you can see wedding photo shoots going on\nmost any weekend (such as this\none<\/a>). The same shrine<\/span> sub-business that handles all that has a large<\/span>\ninventory of traditional formal clothes for rent, so that's where we went\nfor Anthony's special day.<\/p>\n\n

Anthony had never had tabi<\/a><\/i> (often called “tabi socks” in English) before,\nand found it to be a notable<\/span> experience. I've never worn them, so can only\nimagine, though I suppose<\/span> it's similar to toe socks<\/a>\n(gohonyubi kutushita<\/i>), of which I have<\/span> plenty. (I wonder,<\/span> though,\nwhat Anthony's reaction would be when trying on a pair<\/span> of Vibram FiveFingers\nshoes<\/a>!?)<\/p>\n\n

Getting dressed in a hakama<\/a> is deceptively complex. It sort of<\/span> looks like a\nsimple<\/span> robe (had hard can it be?<\/i>), but it's got all kinds of layers\nand belts and such, with specific ways they must be done. I guess<\/span> it's\ncomparable to my expecting a clip<\/span>-on tie and then being faced with the real\nthing.<\/p>\n\n

Luckily, the staff had plenty of practice, and one Matsushita-san went\nabout getting him dressed in a pleasant<\/span> but efficient manner that belied\nthe complexity of it all.<\/p>\n\n

Somewhere around here is when I took<\/span> the picture that leads this post,\nwhere the ladies are working in an efficient whirlwind of activity getting\nhim gussied up, and he's just standing there taking it all in stride.<\/p>\n\n
