I had a photogenic day today. Riding bikes out in the park with Anthony, I taught<\/span> him how to ride down steps. He was apprehensive<\/span>, but I\ndemonstrated,<\/span> he tried it, and was successful.<\/p>\n\n

Time flys... it seems that it was only just the other day that he got is first\nbike<\/a> and learned to ride<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

While we were there, we got a call from Fumie telling us to check in at\nthe Heian Shrine for a fitting<\/span> for Anthony to wear a hakama<\/a>\n(traditional Japanese male formal ware) at a shichi-go-san<\/i><\/a> children's-blessing festival event\nnext week. We've always wanted to see him dressed up like this – it's<\/span>\ngoing to be so<\/i> cute – but<\/span> so far have only done it informally\nand incidentally while staying at traditional inns, such as in Kinosaki\nlast March<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Hakama can be\ntraditional and classic<\/a>\nor wild and outlandish<\/a>; we opted for “traditional and classic”...<\/p>\n\n

We're particularly excited because we didn't think we'd get to do this,\nbecause when Fumie had called about a reservation,<\/span> they told her that there\nwas nothing available. I'd lamented<\/span> about this to my friend Shimada-san<\/a>,\nand he did some research and was somehow able to procure a slot<\/span> for us.\nThanks, Shimada-san!<\/p>\n\n

When we got home, Anthony engaged in some dual-lightsaber<\/a>\naction, with lightsabers he had made from construction paper. Luckily, I was able<\/span> to snap a photo<\/span> before he cut my head off...<\/p>\n\n
