After a week with a most unpleasant cold, I finally<\/span> felt better this\nweekend, just in time for the sports festival at Anthony's school. Now that he<\/span>'s in first grade participating with 500 kids from K1-6, it's a much<\/span>\nbigger event than when he was in kindergarten, and the emphasis has\nswitched from the mere enjoyment of participation to teamwork.<\/p>\n\n

First on the agenda of the all-day affair was one of the few\nnon-teamwork events, a 60<\/span>-meter dash for the first graders....<\/p>\n\n\n

There was also a first-grade obstacle course, involving things like\nriding a tricycle<\/span> and scooting a short<\/span> distance on your butt with a\nskateboard.<\/span> Anthony was leading his heat until the skateboard did him in,\nand so he was behind entering the hurdles...<\/p>\n\n

The lead photo of the post is from when Anthony was accelerating away\nfrom the hurdles. His running<\/span> form now is better than when he was three\nyears old, of course, but he's still a kid.<\/span> Each of the grades did their\nown sprints, and the difference from everyone else in some of the\nsix-grade kids was absolutely shocking, because a few<\/span> of them ran with the\nstrength, efficiency, and natural grace of an adult sprinter (far faster\nand better, I'm sure, even in sixth grade, than I have<\/span> ever been able to\nmuster).<\/p>\n\n\n

I spent all day running around with the camera, which perhaps isn't an\nideal way to spend your first day of health after a protracted<\/span> cold, so\ntoday every bone and muscle aches in the “you overdid it just a bit<\/span>” way\nthat seems to come more easily as the years go by. And I have<\/span> more than a\nweek's<\/span> worth of email to check.... I can't<\/span> recall a time<\/span> in the last 25\nyears that I went<\/span> for a week<\/span> without checking email, so I'm sure it's not\ngoing to be fun. But watching<\/span> Anthony yesterday was wonderful, and aches\naside, it's great to be feeling healthy again.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
