{"id":1321,"date":"2009-09-28T01:10:05","date_gmt":"2009-09-27T16:10:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2009-09-28\/1321"},"modified":"2009-09-28T01:10:05","modified_gmt":"2009-09-27T16:10:05","slug":"more-discoveries-with-nils-mountain-roads-and-spooky-forests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2009-09-28\/1321","title":{"rendered":"More Discoveries with Nils: Mountain Roads and Spooky Forests"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n<div class='resize_warning' id='arw1321'>\n<b>NOTE<\/b>: Images with an <img class='raw' width='19' height='18' src='\/i\/s\/red_zoomup.gif'\/> icon next to them have been artificially shrunk to better fit your screen; click the icon to restore them, in place, to their regular size.\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Not to become an all-<a href=\"\/blog\/2009-09-23\/1319\"\nclass='quiet'>Nils<\/a> blog, but another post about our little scooter ride\ninto Northern Kyoto that yielded the photogenic posts &#8220;<a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2009-09-11\/1312\" class='quiet'><span class='nobr'>A Visit<\/span> to\nRengeji Temple<\/a>&#8221; and &#8220;<a href=\"\/blog\/2009-09-11\/1312\"\nclass='quiet'>The Hakuryuuen Gardens<\/a>.&#8221; We continued into the mountains north of Kyoto,\npast <a href=\"\/blog\/category\/japan\/kibune\" class='quiet'>Kibune<\/a>\nand Kurama, way north past civilization into the deep forest, up the mountain.<\/p>\n\n<p>I had been on the particular road many times, but never on <span class='nobr'>a scooter<\/span>\n(and was impressed with how it handled the steep road with 450lbs of\npassengers... not bad for <span class='nobr'>a 125cc<\/span> scooter!). Near the summit we thought to\nturn around and head back when <span class='nobr'>I noticed<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a small<\/span> gravel path leading deeper\ninto the mountain. <span class='nobr'>At its entrance<\/span> were small signs about hiking trails,\nand <span class='nobr'>a place<\/span> called &#8220;pretty view&#8221;, so we decided to check it\nout.<\/p>\n\n<p>It quickly turned into a rough, narrow, bumpy road that <span class='nobr'>I would<\/span> not want\nto take in <span class='nobr'>a normal<\/span> car (a 4&times;4 would have had no problem), and <span class='nobr'>I\nwondered<\/span> what on earth it might be for. Japanese mountains are full of\nessentially abandoned roads that were used at one time during dam\nconstruction or the like, so perhaps that's what this was (though on second\nthought, we were so high near the top of the mountain, <span class='nobr'>I don't<\/span> think <span class='nobr'>a dam<\/span>\nwould do much good).<\/p>\n\n<p>After some time, we came across the most eerie sight: <span class='nobr'>a clearing<\/span> with <span class='nobr'>a\nwell<\/span>-preserved big American-style motor home surrounded by tall weeds, <span class='nobr'>a\nsmall<\/span> well-built shack that looked as if it was made from old railroad\nties, and several house foundations that were bare save <span class='nobr'>a chimney<\/span> jutting\nup....<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic'><a name=\"022708\" href=\"\/i\/JF7_022708.jpg\"\n><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JF7_022708_sm.jpg\" width=\"690\" height=\"459\"\nalt=\"What on Earth? -- Kyoto, Japan -- Copyright 2009 Jeffrey Friedl, https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/\"\nid=\"i022708\"\ntitle=\"What on Earth? -- Kyoto, Japan -- Copyright 2009 Jeffrey Friedl, https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/\"\/><\/a>\n<br\/><span class=\"camera-info robots-nocontent\">Nikon D700 + Nikkor 24-70mm f\/2.8 @ 24 mm &mdash; location, but the road became so rutty and bouldered that\nit was impassable on bike.
