for Sep 24th\n<\/div>\n\n<p>One bit of homework Anthony and his first-grade friends have every day\nis to write an entry in their <span class='nobr'>\u7d75\u65e5\u8a18<\/span> (<i>enikki<\/i> &mdash; Picture Diary),\nwhere they fill half of <span class='nobr'>a page<\/span> with writing about something from the day,\nwith the other half getting <span class='nobr'>a related<\/span> picture. <span class='nobr'>I assume<\/span> its main purpose is\nfor practice in writing Japanese, but it also gives them <span class='nobr'>a chance<\/span> to stop\nand think about their day, and good practice for expressing themselves in\nwriting.<\/p>\n\n<p>Today was the first day back after <span class='nobr'>a long<\/span> five-day weekend and he\ncouldn't think of something to write, so Fumie asked whether there was any\nmessage he might want to say to the teacher, and so he came up with the\nentry shown above...<\/p>\n\n<style type=\"text\/css\">\n .j1320 { margin-left: 3em; for Sep 23rd\n<\/div>\n\n<p>It reads...<\/p>\n\n<div class='j1320'><span class='h1320'>\u30b5\u30fc\u30ab\u30b9<\/span><\/div>\n<div class='e1320'><span class='h1320'>Circus<\/span><\/div>\n\n<div class='j1320'>\u30b5\u30fc\u30ab\u30b9\u306b\u3044\u304d\u307e\u3057\u305f<\/div>\n<div class='e1320'>We went to the circus.<\/div>\n\n<div class='j1320'>\u3081\u3061\u3083\u304f\u3061\u3083\u3059\u3054\u3044\u3053\u3068\u3092\u3057\u306f\u308a\u307e\u3057\u305f<\/div>\n<div class='e1320'>They did extremely super amazing things<\/div>\n\n<div class='j1320'>\u306b\u3093\u3058\u3083\u3067\u3082\u3067\u304d\u306a\u3044\u3053\u3068\u3092\u3057\u306f\u308a\u307e\u3057\u305f<\/div>\n<div class='e1320'>They did things that even a <i>ninja<\/i> couldn't do.<\/div>\n\n<div class='j1320'>\u3068\u3093\u3060\u308a\u304f\u308b\u304f\u308b\u307e\u308f\u3063\u305f\u308a\u304a\u3082\u3057\u308d\u3044\u3053\u3068\u304a\u3057\u305f\u308a\u3044\u308d\u30fc\u306a\u3053\u3068\u304a\u3057\u306f\u308a\u307e\u3057\u305f<\/div>\n<div class='e1320'>Cool stuff like flying and spinning around and around, they did all kinds of things.<\/div>\n\n<p>He had forgotten to punctuate his sentences, so the teacher filled in\ntwo periods (though <span class='nobr'>I think<\/span> four are actually needed). <span class='nobr'>The red squiggles<\/span>\nare areas marked with <span class='nobr'>a flower<\/span> <span class='nobr'>(\u82b1\u4e38<\/span> <i>hanamaru<\/i>, &#8220;flower circle&#8221;),\nmeaning that they're particularly well done. <span class='nobr'>It's equivalent<\/span> to <span class='nobr'>a gold<\/span> star\nor happy-face sticker <span class='nobr'>a kid<\/span> might get in The States.<\/p>\n\n<p>The teacher's comments at the end (at left) say &#8220;<b>Amazing! <span class='nobr'>One probably<\/span> couldn't imitate it! They sure must have practiced quite <span class='nobr'>a lot.<\/span><\/b>&#8221;<\/p>\n\n<p>Most of the show was acrobatics and other amazing feats of physical\nskill (strength, juggling, balance, etc.), but there were episodes of\ncomedy and, like any Cirque du Soleil, episodes of manic LSD-inspired\nabsurdity that no one could possibly understand.<\/p>\n\n<p>Anthony's pictures refers to one of the scenes of comedy and fun, the\n&#8220;Helium Dance&#8221;, where <span class='nobr'>a performer<\/span> of <i>very<\/i> slight stature (<span class='nobr'>a midget,<\/span>\n<span class='nobr'>a somewhat<\/span> elderly lady with the most regal poise and grace) is suspended\nfrom <span class='nobr'>a bunch<\/span> of balloons such that she weighs just <span class='nobr'>a touch<\/span> more than\nnothing. And so, with <span class='nobr'>a slight<\/span> push, she can fly through the air in <span class='nobr'>a slow,<\/span>\ngentle arc, eventually coming back down at <span class='nobr'>a leisurely<\/span> pace. <span class='nobr'>The fun part<\/span>\nwas when she was launched into the audience, who were then told to use both\nhands to gently pass her along the way, and like <span class='nobr'>a beach<\/span> ball at <span class='nobr'>a stadium,<\/span>\nshe went all over. <span class='nobr'>But unlike<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a beach<\/span> ball, she's interacting with the\naudience and having <span class='nobr'>a ball<\/span> of <span class='nobr'>a time.<\/span><\/p>\n\n<p>I certainly would have liked to fly like that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One bit of homework Anthony and his first-grade friends have every day is to write an entry in their \u7d75\u65e5\u8a18 (enikki -- Picture Diary), where they fill half of a page with writing about something from the day, with the other half getting a related picture.
