Zak<\/a> invited me\nto a small<\/span> musical gathering he was part of this evening, at an old Kyoto\nmachiya<\/a>\nhouse that's been turned into a French<\/span> cafe, Les Trois\nMaisons<\/a>. A common<\/span> friend had recognized their individual talents, and\nthought it'd make for an interesting experience to put them together.<\/p>\n\n

The intimate ambiance was supurb for live music....<\/p>\n\n

That shot of Zak (taken at ISO6400, 200mm, 1\/30th second) is a great<\/span>\ntestament of the benefits of both the Nikon\nD700's low-light prowess<\/a>, and of the vibration-reduction feature of my\nNikkor 70<\/span>-200\nf\/2.8 zoom<\/a>. And, perhaps, my steady hand.<\/p>\n\n

The music selection was also eclectic, ranging from Amazing Grace<\/i>\nto Japanese folk classics to Brahms' Lullaby<\/i> to Italian and Irish\npieces that I didn't<\/span> know. It was all<\/span> wonderful.<\/p>\n\n

They ended with a singalong of a traditional<\/span> folk song from 1914, furusato<\/i><\/a>....<\/p>\n\n

Luckily for all involved, I refrained<\/span> from participating in the singalong.<\/p>\n\n

I had never seen a shou<\/i> before, so took a few<\/span> moments to check it out...<\/p>\n\n

The guy didn't know the full provenance of the instrument beyond about\n160 years ago, but he suspects that it was quite old even then.<\/p>\n\n

I've got to also say that the bacon eggplant quiche I had<\/span> at the cafe\nwas the best quiche I'd ever had... absolutely delicous. I'd gotten<\/span> there\nearly to eat and chat with friends, and after the concert was actually\nthinking to have some more for dinner, but the place was getting crowded\nfor a second<\/span> performance, and I felt<\/span> bad taking a spot,<\/span> so decided against\nit.
