After Nils Ferry<\/a> showed me\nRengeji\nTemple<\/a> the other day, we continued on my scooter up into the mountains\nnorth of Kyoto, toward Kibune<\/a> and Kurama. I'd made the<\/span> trip by car many times, but never by scooter, so I took<\/span> the\nopportunity to check out a cool<\/span>-looking location I'd only briefly glimpsed\nbefore as the car went past.<\/p>\n\n

It turns out that it's a garden, with the big stone to the left of the\nsteps giving its name as Hakuryuuen<\/b> (\u767d\u9f8d\u5712).<\/span><\/p>\n\n

Unfortunately, it's a private garden not normally open to the public, so\nI was<\/span> limited to admiring what I could<\/span> see from the road.<\/p>\n\n

It's a bit hard to see from this angle, but the moss-covered stairs seen\nclearly in the first photo are mid-photo in this one, above and behind the\nbig central rock.<\/p>\n\n

Searching around on the Internet, I found<\/span> out that the garden is owned\nby a clothing<\/span> company. They have a page<\/span> with a few<\/span> low-quality photos here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Across the street was a small cottage done in the same tasteful manner,\nand I see<\/span> now upon close inspection that the name of the garden is also on\nthe door-side nameplate, so indeed, it must be the caretaker's place...<\/p>\n\n

This garden happened to be next to an overpass for the Eizan Train Line,\nso he took the opportunity to get a quintessential<\/span> train shot....<\/p>\n\n

Nils knows the Eizan Train Line well, and in the past has introduced me\nto many attractions that it can bring you to. One of its<\/span> tracks ends at a\ngreat river\nplay spot<\/a>, and a few<\/span> years ago he introduced me to some gorgeous\ntemples in north-east Kyoto – Enkouji<\/a> and\nKonpukuji<\/a>\n– during the hight of their fall-color glory.<\/p>\n\n

And speaking of the Eizan Train Line, fall colors, and this new (for me)\ngarden Hakuryuuen, here's a shot<\/span> from last year's Eizan Train line's\n“Fall-Foliage Tunnel” Lightup<\/a> of the train approaching Hakuryuuen. It's there<\/span> on the right, with the bridge seen in the photo above starting just\npast the curve ahead...<\/p>\n\n

That I could pull this specific photo from my library of 74,000 images\nis a testament<\/span> the usefulness of both geoencoding your photos, and having a\nproximity<\/span>-search function available. I knew I<\/span> had photos from the foliage-lightup\ntrip, but I didn't<\/span> know whether any were at all near this garden, so I did<\/span> a search<\/span>\nin Lightroom with\nmy proximity-search plugin<\/a>,\nand was jazzed to find this photo taken only 120 meters away from the bridge.<\/p>\n\n

(I actually had an image right at the start of the bridge, but since the\nbridge is surrounded by empty space instead of richly colored lighted\nfoliage, this photo 120 meters prior is more compelling.)<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, from what I can tell and imagine, I'm sure the<\/span> garden is\nspectacular in the fall, but it's private, so I'll never know. Can't say I\nblame<\/span> them... if I had<\/span> such a garden,<\/span> I'd probably<\/span> keep it private\ntoo....<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
