My most recent two posts,\n“Three Blades of Grass, and Friends<\/a>”\nand\n“Table with a View<\/span><\/a>”,\nare about a restaurant<\/span> we visited on Saturday, Toganojaya (\u3068\u304c\u4e43\u8336\u5c4b<\/span><\/b>), in the Takao\narea in the mountains of north-west Kyoto.<\/p>\n\n

Seeing me take the shot above, the proprietor kindly opened up the big\nparasol (the red cone-looking thing to the right of center), and I tried<\/span> to\nget a shot<\/span> with it...<\/p>\n\n

These bamboo-and-cloth parasols are not uncommon, but they're difficult\nto photograph well because digital cameras can't handle<\/a>\ntheir deep\ncolor<\/a>, especially with the huge dynamic range of bright sunlight and\ndark shadows. Doesn't stop me from trying, for example, as I did<\/span> here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, back at the restaurant, dining is done in simple, airy rooms\nwith ample views of the river and trees just outside the large open\nwindows....<\/p>\n\n\n

We appeared to be the first customers of the day... it was shocking, in a\nhappy<\/span> way, to have such a nice<\/span> place to ourselves on such a pleasant<\/span>\nSaturday.<\/p>\n\n

After ordering, we took the opportunity to take some pictures. Anthony\nis not normally allowed to use the phone he carries for emergencies, but\nwhen he's with us he's allowed to use its\ncamera<\/a>, so he did...<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prices were reasonable, and the food was good.<\/p>\n\n

Like those in Kibune<\/a>, this restaurant is sandwiched between the scenic\nbeauty of the river on one side, and the decidedly unscenicness of a\nthoroughfare<\/span> on the other.<\/p>\n\n

As nice as this restaurant is once you're inside, there's no hint of\nthat from the front, which is less than uninviting...<\/p>\n\n

Across the street is a large free public parking lot, and paths that\nlead to an unseen Kousan Temple<\/a>, a world<\/span> heritage site, tucked away up in\nthe mountain. The lot was<\/span> almost empty when we arrived, but packed with cars and\ntour busses by the time we left.<\/p>\n\n

We opted to save the temple for a later<\/span> visit. but we did head down to\nthe river after eating, which I'll opt to save for a later<\/span> post, here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Update: I finally got to the Kosan Temple across the street, two years later: Big, Moody Space of the Kosan Temple in Northwest Kyoto<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n
