Having just returned from a trip Stateside with Anthony, I'm reminded<\/span> that I neglected<\/span> to post these photos before leaving. Before the trip, I had posted<\/span> about Curious George's new passport<\/a>; these are from the same\nphoto session in early July, where I took<\/span> the photo for Anthony's new\nJapanese passport. (We'd renewed his American passport<\/a>\nlast year.)<\/p>\n\n

Anthony was hamming it up, as you can see, but we eventually got one for\nhis passport. Even in the one directly above, he's still smiling too much\nfor a Japanese<\/span> passport, so we had to tone it down.<\/p>\n\n

Until you actually do it, it's almost shocking how easy it is to get\nthese kinds of photos. You don't need all kinds of fancy stuff, because\nyou only need to worry about what's in frame. (As I wrote<\/span> a couple<\/span> of years ago,\n“If It's Not in Frame, It Doesn't Exist<\/a>”.)<\/p>\n\n

I had forgotten that we needed the photos for his passport application,\nand it was getting late and light was on the wane, so I brought<\/span> Anthony out\nonto the veranda where there was still a bit<\/span> left. Fumie happened to be\naround, so I grabbed<\/span> a big<\/span> reflector and asked her to hold it just out of\nframe, to fill in a bit<\/span> of the shadow on the side of Anthony's face. I took a<\/span> few test shots while he calmed down, some real shots, and then some more\nsilly shots because he was in the mood. Start to finish, silliness\nincluded, was five minutes.<\/p>\n\n

I used a fairly good zoom (my Nikkor\n70<\/span>-200<\/a>) so that I could<\/span> get further away while still keeping somewhat\nof a tight<\/span> head-and-shoulder shot. This helps de-accentuate the nose, which\notherwise – if you're too close – gets somewhat distorted\nbecause it sticks out from the rest of the face. This is all classic\nportraiture, I suppose.<\/span> (For an exaggerated example of the too-close\nbig-nose effect, see this\nsilly photo taken with a wide<\/span>-angle lens<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n
