The theme of this summer's family get-together is “Grandma and\nGrandpa Friedl's grandchildren”, though I've tended to frame it from\nAnthony's point of reference with posts like “Conflagration\nof Cousins<\/a>” and “More Cousins 'n\nSuch<\/a>”. Six of the<\/span> grandchildren have been featured in posts\nduring the last two weeks, but one remains, Grandchild #6½<\/i>,\ndue at the end of November. He or she<\/span> will Anthony's sixth cousin, and will\nbe Uncle Mikey and Aunt Chickee's #3, after four-year-old Grace and\ntwo-year-old Luke.<\/p>\n\n

I wanted the as-yet-unnamed cousin to be represented in my posts, so I\nasked<\/span> Chickee to pose for a clich<\/span>é soft-focus “I'm pregnant and\nglowing” portrait. I've never really done a portrait<\/span> beyond an impromptu\n“hey, stand\nover there and I'll take a family<\/span> shot<\/a>”, a quick<\/span> snap at a\nwedding<\/span><\/a>, or a bit<\/span> of monkeying around<\/a>, so I wasn't<\/span> really sure what to do.<\/p>\n\n

As I said, it's cliché, so wasn't too hard to get something with\nthe right mood, and after a bit<\/span> of negative\nclarity<\/a> in Lightroom, and a touch<\/span> of dark vignette, voilà...<\/p>\n\n

I then thought to try a regular portrait, for the first time fussing\nwith apparently minor things that are not minor at all, like how the hair\nfell, the posture of the hands, the tilt of the head, etc...<\/p>\n\n

All of those shots came out looking contrived – I clearly<\/span> have a\nlot<\/span> to learn and experience to gain – but the first shot I took<\/span> just\nto check framing, without any forethought or direction, came out great, and\nthat's what you see above. I guess<\/span> when it comes down to it, she looks so\nfantastic all a photographer<\/span> need do is point and shoot.<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
