The other day's post about all of Anthony's cousins getting together for\nthe first time started with a photo<\/span> titled “Luke's\nToes<\/a>”. I really<\/span> like it, but it's Luke's eyes that are most amazing.\nLike most toddlers, his eyes gaze around to whatever his mind is paying\nattention to at the moment (which is not, to a parent's<\/span> consternation,\ngenerally what the parent wants him to pay attention to). But when Luke<\/span>\ndecides to fix his gaze on you, wow, what eyes. Arresting!<\/p>\n\n

Today is Luke's birthday. Happy Birthday, little buddy!<\/p>\n\n

The picture above is a fairly tight crop from a photo<\/span> I took<\/span> while he\nwas in a small<\/span> swing, being pushed by Grandma, coming back and forth toward\nand away from me. I snapped<\/span> a bunch<\/span> of pictures trying to get him in focus,\nand I succeeded<\/span> in a couple,<\/span> but it turns out that the first of the bunch\nwas the best.<\/p>\n\n

Frankly, I don't know what's more miraculous, that I was<\/span> able to get his\neyes almost perfectly in focus as he swung, or that I could<\/span> get a toddler's<\/span>\nattention for the full 1\/100th-second duration of the shot. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n

Lots of baby's have piercing eyes like this – Anthony's cousins\nTiti (4 months) and Jena (10 months) do as well – but it doesn't\nseem often that this quality lasts into the toddler stage.<\/p>\n\n

It's sort of different, but I'm reminded of the arresting gaze of a friend's<\/span><\/a>\nnine-year-old boy Nao<\/a>, that I posted<\/span>\nabout a couple<\/span> of years ago. In his case<\/span> it's less about the eyes alone and\nmore about.... something else, some “it” factor that includes the eyes. I\ndon't<\/span> know.<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, it'll be interesting to revisit Luke and his eyes in the years\nto come to see (excuse the pun) how his gaze develops.<\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
