In my post the other day about flowers lining a lane<\/span><\/a> on\nTaketomi Island (a tiny,<\/span> culturally-unique island far south of Japan), I asked<\/span> about the color of the flowers. No one got<\/span> it right until I gave<\/span> a\nhint,<\/span> that being a botanist<\/span> might help. Then a botanist<\/span> got it right<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

That's not the only botanical surprise we found in the coral walls. We often<\/span> found plants growing from them, apparently like a weed,<\/span> as seen here\nin a photo<\/span> that six-year-old Anthony took with a cell<\/span>-phone camera:<\/p>\n\n

The coral stones and plant are mostly achromatic, made more so in\nAnthony's picture by the low quality of the cell-phone camera. Still, it\nrepresents well how they looked... like long-dead, long-dried remnants of\nsome previously-thriving plant. As such, we didn't even really notice them\nfor much of the day.....<\/p>\n\n

So it was with considerable surprise that when I finally<\/span> paid close\nattention to one and noticed a bit<\/span> of color, then touched one, and found\nthat they're quite living: soft, supple, with a bit<\/span> of bulk and\nbounce...<\/p>\n\n
