This is #6 in a series on our visit to KidZania in\nNishinomiya, Japan<\/a>, where Anthony's day to this point has consisted of working\nas a gas-station attendant<\/a>, getting some banking\ndone<\/a>, a short<\/span> stint as construction\nworker<\/a>, and enrollment in driver's ed<\/a> to\nget a driver's<\/span> license.<\/p>\n\n

Then it was time for a bit of journalism.<\/p>\n\n

We had no idea what this job involved (nor did Anthony, for that\nmatter), so we were a bit<\/span> surprised when they came out and took off. We followed<\/span> as they wound their way through the crowd, and although they were\njust a second<\/span> or two ahead of me, I suddenly<\/span> realized that I'd lost them\n(or they'd lost me, perhaps). Doh!<\/p>\n\n

After a while, I spotted<\/span> Anthony with another boy on the street in front\nof the\nbank<\/a>....<\/p>\n\n

Anthony clearly had no idea what he was supposed to be doing, but the\nother boy was a bit<\/span> older and helped him out, and eventually Anthony found\nhimself at a dentist's<\/span> office doing an interview...<\/p>\n\n

When he was done, he came back out and joined the other boy in writing up notes for their articles...<\/p>\n\n

The top of his clipboard has a sticker saying “dentist”,\nwhich I found<\/span> out later was his assignment. Each kid was given a location,<\/span>\nbut otherwise had to come up with the story idea (and execution) by\nthemselves.<\/p>\n\n

The first part of the note says \"Good evening, I'm a reporter<\/span> for the\nAsahi Newspaper; allow me to ask some questions.\", so I guess<\/span> that's what\nhe was writing earlier back at the bureau, as he learned the reporter\nropes.<\/p>\n\n

Once the notes were written, they returned to work on their stories...<\/p>\n\n

Eventually they were done, and it seems that Anthony's article was page\none above the fold! (at least for the print run of 1 copy that he received \ud83d\ude42\n)....<\/span><\/p>\n\n

The four large vertically-written characters in the upper-right are the\nname of the newspaper, likely using the same font and now-somewhat-archaic\ncharacters used when the paper first opened in 1879.<\/p>\n\n

The large white-on-black writing across the top is Anthony's headline, which\nsays, more or less, “Cavity Store”, which is apparently\nAnthony's impression of a dental<\/span> clinic. It's as funny<\/span> in Japanese as in\nEnglish, though I don't<\/span> believe he intended it to be.<\/p>\n\n

Under that in the vertical right-to-left print is his article, which\nreads in whole: “It seemed difficult. It seemed<\/span> yucky.”<\/p>

Under\nthat is the byline, which has a picture<\/span> of him, his name, and kisha<\/i>,\nwhich might be translated as “reporter”,\n“journalist”, “correspondent”, etc., and is the\nsame thing that was on the yellow armband the kids wore when out on\nassignment.<\/p>\n\n
