Continuing with the story about our visit to\nKidZania in Nishinomiya, Japan<\/a>\nthe other day, where Anthony started his play by\nworking as a gas<\/span>-station attendant<\/a>. After working at the gas station, he wanted to be on the opposite end of the experience, as a driver.<\/span> To drive<\/span> in KidZania involves renting\na car,<\/span> but to do that you have to have money (which he now did, thanks to his gas-station pay) and a driver<\/span> license, which he did not have.<\/p>\n\n

To get a driver license, you have to attend driving school (which itself\nhas a cost<\/span>), but he found the school booked up solid for a while,<\/span> so he\ndecided to take the time to get some banking done.<\/p>\n\n

The KidZania banking experience is exceedingly realistic.<\/p>\n\n

There's not a single thing in the picture above that gives it away as\nfake. Every detail of everything you see in the picture above (and the two\nbelow), including the teller mannerisms and even facial expressions, is\n100% authentic. If I were<\/span> to see these pictures out of context, I wouldn't<\/span>\nbelieve they're fake (although unlike the kids, I wouldn't<\/span> think the stack\nof cash behind the glass is real.... I'd think<\/span> it's some sort of\npromotional display). Without question this was the most realistic\nexperience of the day.<\/p>\n\n

The bank, by the way – Sumitomo Mitsui<\/a> – has its roots back to 1683.\nFumie's had an account there since she was a kid<\/span> (though not at the\nKidZania branch \ud83d\ude42 ). According to Wikipedia, it's the 8th largest bank in\nthe world.<\/p>\n\n

When we arrived at KidZania, Anthony received a traveler's<\/span> check for 50\nKidZo (“KidZo” being the monetary unit in KidZania). Here at the bank, he\nopened an account in his name and deposited it, receiving a wallet<\/span> and an\nATM card. When I was<\/span> a kid<\/span> you got a toaster<\/span> or some steak knives when you\nopened a bank<\/span> account; KidZania seems to be more practical.<\/p>\n\n

Once he got out, he wanted his money as cash, not realizing that he\ncould have gotten it from the teller. So, ATM card in<\/span> hand, off to get some\ncash....<\/p>\n\n

The ATM was quite real, but the software was highly customized for\nKidZania. All the writing<\/span> was at the first-grade level (all kanji<\/a> had furigana<\/a>), and the transactions\nwere limited to withdrawals and balance inquiries. Also, when entering the PIN, any four digits\nwill do \ud83d\ude42 .<\/p>\n\n
