I want to highlight a recent post by an acquaintance living in Amami, of\nhis daughter's 2nd-grade class lunch and his visit to it. It's just a<\/span> small\nslice of everyday life in Japan, but I love<\/span> it.<\/p>\n\n

We've never been invited to have lunch at Anthony's school, but much of\nwhat's described in that post – how the kids take turns doing\ndifferent chores, and dress up with gloves and aprons and masks –\nmatches what I know<\/span> of Anthony's first-grade class.<\/p>\n\n

The Amami\nIslands<\/a> are in the East China sea in the far south of Japan, between\nthe mainland and Okinawa (much closer than Ishigaki\nIsland<\/a> where we visited recently, but still plenty far away). Amami\nholds a special<\/span> place in our heart because it's where Fumie's late\ngrandmother<\/a> is from.<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, “Amami Superman Photography<\/a>” is a blog<\/span> by an\nAmerican guy, Earnest Barr, who has lived there for some time. His daughter<\/span> is a year<\/span> older than Anthony. I've conversed with Earnest over email, and\nhave enjoyed his blog and its stories and pictures for some time, but I've\nnever met him or even seen a picture<\/span> of<\/i> him. I find it<\/span> funny that\nthrough our emails I sort<\/span> of know him, yet could coincidentally sit down\nnext to him on a park<\/span> bench and exchange idle conversation without even\nrealizing we know each other.<\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
