After our sunset swim<\/a> on the 2nd day of our recent trip\nto Ishigaki Island<\/a> in the far south of Japan in the East China Sea, we\ngot cleaned up and headed over to the outside barbecue restaurant for\ndinner.<\/p>\n\n

Figuring that I should order a beverage befitting the tropical island we\nwere on, I got the<\/span> nondescript cocktail above. Fumie also got some kind of\ncocktail, and Anthony got a big<\/span> guava juice...<\/p>\n\n

It was somewhat of a surprise to find out that the menu essentially had\none item, yakiniku<\/i> – \u713c\u304d\u8089, “barbecue dinner” – and\nmore than somewhat of a shock<\/span> to find the price (over $100 per adult!).\nIshigaki is known for its beef, and at the time we were certainly knowing\nour hunger, so we went ahead with it.<\/p>\n\n

Let me just say that at the time, I particularly<\/span> appreciated those that\nmonth who had sent me a little<\/span> something<\/a> in thanks for my Lightroom\nplugin efforts<\/a>. Dinner was on you, so thanks!<\/p>\n\n

With Japanese yakiniku<\/i>, you cook the food yourself over an open\nflame at the table....<\/p>\n\n

Sometimes the fat dripping off the meat causes a flameup,<\/span> but in this\ncase, perhaps because it was outside, the flameups were more... how shall I\nput<\/span> it.... lively<\/b>.<\/p>\n\n

Clearly, I needed<\/span> something to put out the flames...<\/p>\n\n

And just in case the beer wasn't sufficient to handle the flames, I arranged<\/span> for some inclement weather.<\/p>\n\n

As we were eating the evening weather seemed perfect, but as we were\ndonning fire helmets and manning pick axes to tackle the barbecue fire, a\nfew<\/span> tentative specks of rain carried by the wind found their way to us.<\/p>\n\n

I thought it was absurd, but at just those few specks, the staff started\nunfurling the big umbrellas that covered the (now almost completely empty)\neating area...<\/p>\n\n

The staff then moved our table under the umbrella, and brought blankets\nwe could drape over our laps, and hand umbrellas, just in case. I thought<\/span> it was\nquite an over reaction, but....<\/p>\n\n

As you might expect, the staff knew what they were doing and I was<\/span>\nclueless, because before long it was pouring<\/i>. I got plenty<\/span> soaked\nduring the 1-second dash from the big umbrella to under another, to get\nthis shot....<\/p>\n\n

Oddly, the moment we finished dinner, the rain stopped completely, so we\ndidn't even need the hand umbrellas to return to our room.<\/p>\n\n

It had been a long day, starting with a sightseeing\ndrive through the country<\/a>, a visit<\/span> to a secluded\nbeach<\/a>, the dynamic windy weather at the lighthouse at\nthe island's northern-most tip<\/a>, and the sunset swim<\/a>\nwhen we returned.<\/p>\n\n

That's a big day for anyone, especially a six<\/span>-year-old boy, who was soon\nout like a light.<\/span>..<\/p>\n\n
