Since starting first grade<\/a>, Anthony has been collecting an\nallowance. He gets 50<\/span> yen a day<\/span> (about US$3.60\/week), which is\nsubstantially more than the five-cents-a-week that I got<\/span> 40 years ago, but\nstill much less than many of my own peers got at the time. In any case<\/span>, 50\nyen a day<\/span> seems to be the right amount to help instill a sense<\/span> of value and\na respect<\/span> for saving.<\/p>\n\n

He's still not really grasping the concept of money – value to him\nis in the physical number of coins, not in their amount – but it's\ncoming along. He'd not spent<\/span> anything lately, so he had a big<\/span> pile of coins\nthat added up to almost $20, and was in the mood today to spend it.<\/p>\n\n

Fumie took him shopping, and he selected a Lego<\/span> set that cost just about\nexactly what he had, and came home and put it together.<\/p>\n\n

The instructions that come with these kinds of Lego sets are absolutely\natrocious, designed neither for humans nor, apparently, by humans. But,\nhe's got a lot of experience<\/a>, and so seemed to have no trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n
