On our\nvisit to the Sanzen-in Temple<\/a> in the mountains north of Kyoto a couple<\/span>\nof weeks ago, at the highest area that we ventured to (where Anthony got his\nprize<\/a> for doing the “sticker rally”), there were racks and racks of\nlittle “offering” statues, each representing a donation<\/span> to the\ntemple.....<\/p>\n\n

Each face of each “wall” has 1,500 statuettes, so there are 12,000\nstatuettes in these four walls, with more in the background. These were the\nonly “offering” things I noticed,<\/span> which makes a stark<\/span> comparison to\n\nthe Fushimi\nInari Shrine<\/a>, in Kyoto's southern mountains, where everything not nailed down\nis an offering, and everything nailed down is, too (see\nhere<\/a>,\nhere<\/a>, and\nhere<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n

Of course, row after row after row of little statues is photographically\ninviting, but my long-suffering family had already started back down the\nmountain, so I had<\/span> only a few<\/span> moments to try to satisfy my artistic\ncuriosity. When I got<\/span> home, I was surprised<\/span> by two things. First, at how\nperfectly isolated the focus status is in the f\/2.8 shot above. That's what\nI was<\/span> going for, of course, but I didn't<\/span> think it would actually work out\nso well.<\/p>\n\n

Then, in this f\/16 shot, where more statuettes are in focus, it seems\nsomehow that each statue is unique (and not just weathered differently),\nbut I can't<\/span> absolutely identify what's different among them....<\/p>\n\n

The lips are almost completely worn from the main-focus statue (the 3rd\nfrom the left), especially compared with the one to the left (2nd from the\nleft). But his eyebrows<\/span> seem bolder, not more worn, so perhaps they're just\ndifferent generations of the same kind of mold? But in looking<\/span> down the line,\nthere's a not<\/span>-so subtle irregularity that disappears upon close inspection,\nlike those gray dots in the corners among black squares.<\/p>\n\n

If I ever go back, it's on my list to investigate them more, both\nphotographically and otherwise.<\/p>\n\n
