It was a supremely wonderful day today, with perfect sun and\ntemperatures. The hysteria from the swine-flu plague<\/a> is mostly past, so we\nwent out for a family<\/span> bike ride, our first in ages... perhaps the first\nsince last\nsummer in Whistler, Canada<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Just prior to taking the picture above, I discovered<\/span> that it's possible\n– though not particularly easy, and certainly not becoming – to\nchange the focus selector switch on a Nikon<\/span> D700 body with your teeth. (I\nwas<\/span> riding a standard<\/span> mamachari<\/i> Japanese bicycle, which is\ninherently unstable, and so unlike the bikes I rode<\/span> growing up, it's almost\nimpossible to ride with no hands, so I had<\/span> only one hand free to hold the\ncamera.)<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, it was just a wonderful day, with people out and about. You can see<\/span> in the background of the next photo kids playing in the river, which\nhas stepping stones running across<\/a>...<\/p>\n\n

We made our way to the grounds of the Kyoto Imperial Palace, and found a\nnicely<\/span> wooded trail to enjoy...<\/p>\n\n\n

We'd brought along some lunch, so stopped at a nice,<\/span> quiet area to eat. One of the<\/span> benches was just an old, large, slab of wood:<\/p>\n\n

After lunch, and a game of catch with a baseball<\/span> (Anthony's getting much\nbetter at catching with the mitt, something he did\nfor the first time<\/a> just last month.)<\/p>\n\n

We then took off for another part of the Imperial-Palace grounds...<\/p>\n\n

We stopped when Anthony spotted a tree<\/span> that he thought he could try to\nclimb. He's pretty<\/span> much a scaredy<\/span>-cat when it comes to stuff like this, so I\nwas<\/span> happy he wanted to give it a try.<\/span>..<\/p>\n\n

We played catch a bit more, but met somewhat of a roadblock<\/span> when the\nball got caught high up in a huge<\/span> evergreen with wide, thick branches. The roadblock<\/span> became a bit<\/span> more troublesome – and substantially more\namusing – when the mitt I was<\/span> throwing to try to dislodge the ball\nalso got stuck.<\/p>\n\n

Luckily, we had a small plastic bottle of water, which dislodged the\nmitt on the first try, and, with the mitt pressed back into service, we\nsoon had the ball back as well.<\/p>\n\n

I decided to take a break on the ground, and Anthony decided to take a\nbreak<\/span> on me....<\/p>\n\n

... and ended up at the playground in the far corner of the grounds,\nwhere Anthony played on a huge<\/span> fallen tree<\/a>, and swung on a\nswing<\/span><\/a>, and did other random assorted play.<\/p>\n\n

Getting late, we headed home via a different<\/span> route, passing over the\nKamo river above the path near where the first picture of this post was\ntaken...<\/p>\n\n
