So, continuing with the story about our recent\n\nvisit to the\nSanzen-in Temple<\/a> in the Kyoto mountain suburb Ohara on Sunday (which\nproduced the pretty desktop backgrounds I posted<\/span><\/a> yesterday)....<\/p>\n\n

As I said in the first post, it's a mountain<\/span> temple, and so it has\ndifferent zones separated by various flights of stairs....<\/p>\n\n

You can see in the background of the picture above the trunks of some\ncedars disappearing above the lower canopy of maple and other leafy trees. The cedars<\/span> here were all very tall, and ramrod straight...<\/p>\n\n

The next level included a modern (circa 1989) temple building (one you\ncould wear shoes in!), and in front was an incense station....<\/p>\n\n

At a station like this, you light some incense and make a wish<\/span> while the\nsmoke wafts over you, (and, perhaps like the gomaki<\/i> sticks I wrote<\/span>\nabout in Part I, the wish then accompanies the smoke as it drifts up toward\nthe heavens). I mentioned<\/span> it a couple<\/span> of years ago in a post<\/span>\nabout the Nanzen Temple<\/a>, but at the time I was<\/span> less clear about what\nwas going on. (Not that I'm totally clear now, but I digress.<\/span>..)<\/p>\n\n

So, Anthony lit three sticks for us...<\/p>\n\n

Anthony was very sweet... he called me over, then wafted smoke toward\nme, and said something that translates along the lines of “that your back\nfeels better”. Although I've been in good shape lately, I have<\/span> a history<\/span> of\nback problems<\/a>, so his wish was very thoughtful and selfless.<\/p>\n\n

Up some more steps and there were more buildings, and a pleasant<\/span> area for taking a break.<\/span>..<\/p>\n\n

Of more immediate concern was that the final stamp station (discussed in\nPart I) was there, so Anthony could complete his “stamp rally” and collect\na set<\/span> of “remembrance stickers”....<\/p>\n\n

This was as high as we went.... I'm not sure<\/span> how much more further up\nthe mountain is the temple grounds, or where it just becomes mountain\nhiking, but we turned around and headed down a different<\/span> path...<\/p>\n\n

We bought an ice-cream cone from an old lady at a shop<\/span> right across from\nthe entrance to the temple grounds, and while Anthony was enjoying it, an\napron-laden girl about Anthony's age — likely the granddaughter of\nthe owner — emerged from the shop and proceeded to carefully search\nthe big stone steps leading up to the grounds. I don't<\/span> know whether she was\nlooking for bugs or seeds or what, but it was cute, especially with the apron.\nThat's her in the picture above.<\/p>\n\n
