On the second day of our short trip to Ishigaki Island<\/a> in the far south of\nJapan, just shy of Taiwan, after our stopover at a\nlovely<\/span> scenic lookout<\/a> for breathtaking views and ice cream, we\ncontinued north in search of a beach.<\/span> It wasn't an arduous search, because\nit seems that most of island's entire coastline is beach.<\/p>\n\n

We were heading for a specific beach we saw on the map, when – for\njust a moment<\/span> during a bend<\/span> in the road – we caught a glimpse<\/span> of a\ngorgeous<\/span> stretch of beach. It took a<\/span> bit of searching, but we finally\nfound an entrance...<\/p>\n\n

It's not marked at all, and unless you're looking (or lucky) you'd never notice it.\nHere's the view from the middle of the road....<\/p>\n\n

But when you walk through that little clearing, you're greeted with\nthis:<\/p>\n\n

Fumie and I both burn easily – I can<\/span> get a 2nd<\/span>-degree sunburn\nsimply by being exposed to a child's<\/span> drawing of a sunny<\/span> day – so\nafter using copious amounts of sunscreen and the like, we let Anthony\nloose...<\/p>\n\n

The little island-outcroppings visible behind Anthony were 100 yards off\nshore, and really added a wonderful<\/span> dimension to the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n

The outcroppings were made of very sharp rocks (old coral?)...<\/p>\n\n

But, they also had shrubs and such, including the delicate\nflowers I posted<\/span> the other day<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

After taking the photo above, the polarization\nfilter<\/a> came off my lens as I adjusted<\/span> it, and plopped right into the\nsea. I guess<\/span> I didn't<\/span> have it screwed on all the way, silly me. Amazingly,\nas it fluttered toward the bottom, I was able<\/span> to reach down and actually\ngrab it. That saved me from having to reach all the way to the bottom with\none hand while attempting to keep an expensive camera out of the water with\nthe other. I shoved<\/span> the wet filter into my pocket and we headed back to\nshore where I dried<\/span> it off with a T-shirt.<\/p>\n\n

I'm not entirely sure where the strong colors or the vignetting come\nfrom. Unlike the other day when I got<\/span>\nvignetting from a mis<\/span>-sized lens<\/a>, I think<\/span> this came from the\npolarization filter not being screwed on all the way. But then, this was\nafter I got<\/span> back and I think<\/span> I had<\/span> dried the filter and put it back on, so\nI think<\/span> I would<\/span> have made sure to put it on tightly. I dunno.<\/span> I may need<\/span> to\nget a low<\/span>-profile filter, or a larger<\/span> size and a step<\/span>-up ring.<\/p>\n\n

Many of the photos taken at the beach with the filter had a slight<\/span>\namount of vignetting, which I found<\/span> sufficiently annoying to crop away in\nall but the photo above.<\/p>\n\n

In the title to this post I used the word “secluded”, but in reality,\nsince the beach is right off the road, “hidden” is a better<\/span> description. But it turns<\/span> out that there is<\/i> a well<\/span>-secluded beach you can get to\nfrom here, if you don't mind wading (or swimming) through a couple<\/span> hundred\nyards of ocean. More on that, too, in a later<\/span> post...<\/p>\n\n
