After the nice sunset<\/a> of the first evening on our trip to Ishigaki Island<\/a> in the most southern reaches\nof Japan, in the East China Sea, we returned to the hotel for dinner, giving the Japanese-style restaurant a try.<\/span>\nIshigaki Island is known for its beef, so we wanted to try that.<\/p>\n\n

The steak was okay, but after the steak we had on our day trip to Awaji Island a month<\/span> ago<\/a>, everything else will forever fall short. I wanted<\/span> to write about\nit at the time, but what can I say<\/span>? Words are impossible. In your wildest<\/span> dreamland fantasies you couldn't possibly\nimagine a steak<\/span> even in the same universe as the one we had on Awaji. Dark-age peasants would be less surprised by\nCaptain Kirk beaming down among them than you would trying a steak<\/span> at this place on Awaji<\/a>. The restaurant<\/span> on Awaji was a total<\/span> dump, but you can more easily imagine yourself\nsprouting wings and flying to the center of the earth than can even begin to contemplate the multiple stacked levels of\nheaven that is its steak's taste.<\/p>\n\n

But I digress...<\/p>\n\n

The food was good (but not great), but surprisingly, the price was eminently reasonable... a full<\/span> dinner for three,\nwith drinks, was just $80. Yum.<\/p>\n\n

About the strong vignettes, I've got to admit a senior<\/span> moment with my camera: I brought<\/span> my Sigma 30mm f\/1.4 lens<\/a> on the trip totally forgetting that\nit was a DX<\/span> lens (that is, designed for a camera<\/span> body with a smaller<\/span> sensor than that on the Nikon D700 I was<\/span> using, and\nthus if used on my camera, would not fill the entire frame with an image). Knowing the restaurant would be dark, I put the<\/span> Sigma on, and remembered the mismatch only when faced with it in the viewfinder.<\/p>\n\n

Still, I like the<\/span> effect here. I'm not a<\/span> big fan of vignettes, though I do<\/span> add them for effect occasionally, such as\nthe first and last photos of the lighthouse\/sunset\npost<\/a>. In these<\/span> restaurant photos, the vignette matches nicely with the warm tones. I lost the<\/span> natural vingenette in\nthe last photo when I cropped<\/span> it, so that one was added back in Lightroom.<\/p>\n\n
