A lot of prep went into Anthony starting first grade<\/a>,\nmostly by Fumie. Pretty much every single item he brings – and he brings a lot<\/span> – must have his name on it.\n  Every<\/b>.\n  Single<\/b>.\n  Item<\/b>.\n  That means a box<\/span> of 16 crayons requires 17 names (one for the box, and one for each crayon).<\/p>\n\n

Fumie hand-wrote his name directly on the sleeves of the crayons above,\nbut for the longer, sleeveless crayon-pens below, she had to write his name on\nstickers that she then attached...<\/p>\n\n

She had to do this for every pen, every notebook, every chopstick,\nevery pair of scissors, every item in his gym uniform, etc., etc., etc. If it wasn<\/span>'t nailed down, it needed a name<\/span> tag.<\/p>\n\n

The name-tag thing also had to happen for his “math set”.... the\nhundreds and hundreds<\/b> of individual sticks, papers, pretend coins,\ncards, boxes, chips, doodads, etc., in the math set. Thankfully, God bless<\/span> someone, it came with hundreds and hundreds of stickers with his name\npre-written, so all we had to do was stick<\/i> the stickers. That little\namenity brings the task within reach of my non-Motherly skill set, so\ndealing with the math set fell to me.<\/p>\n\n

Having actually learned something from my own parents, I enlisted<\/span> my\nchild to do the work...<\/p>\n\n

That sheet of stickers was one of two sheets. The other<\/span> had all kinds of\ndifferent shapes and colors of stickers, but there were no instructions as\nto which stickers would be appropriate for which items. Just sorting that\nout was a puzzle<\/span> to be solved.<\/p>\n\n

All that was a couple of weeks ago. I was reminded<\/span> of it today because\nAnthony has his first field trip today, and as such, Fumie made a bento<\/span> for\nhim to bring along this morning. It's the first<\/span> school bento since Anthony\ngraduated from kindergarten<\/a> last month...<\/p>\n\n\n
