This post continues from my previous post, “Cherry Blossoms\nin the Rain at the Heian Shrine<\/a>”. Even more so than in that post, a lot<\/span>\nof the pictures this time have a sort<\/span> of distinct (distinctly annoying?)\nfeel, with multiple planes of focus (or the lack there of).<\/p>\n\n

Also, as with some of the photos in last month's “Kyoto 2009\nCherry-Blossom Preview<\/a>”, some this time have had a touch<\/span> of Lightroom's\n“negative clarity”<\/a>, which I apparently<\/span> am enamored with. The shot above<\/span>, of course, has had a lot<\/span> of negative clarity applied, to give it a\nglowing<\/span> pastel feel. I guess<\/span> it qualifies as “art”, which means that I don't<\/span>\ncare whether you think it's contrived and affected. \ud83d\ude42<\/p>\n\n

The first picture in last year's “Snowy Gardens of\nthe Heian Shrine<\/a>” is a nice<\/span> shot from almost the same vantage point,\nwith Anthony and Fumie reflected in the glassy surface of the cold, winter\npond.<\/p>\n\n

That little lake has stepping stones that were closed off this time, but\nI think<\/span> I've seen people on them before...<\/p>\n\n

The guy in the picture above had a big<\/span> pro-level Canon SLR and a\nbig<\/b> lens of some sort. Would like to have seen his results.<\/p>\n\n

As many guessed correctly to the Geometric “What\nam I?” Quiz<\/a> from the other day, the pattern in the dirt is from\nrainwater dripping from the bamboo lattice. You might<\/span> recall that the paths\nseen in Part\nI<\/a> of this pair of posts showed no signs of these patterns, and that's\nalmost certainly because those paths are well traveled, but the path in the\nphoto above is normally a dead<\/span> end. (It leads to a closed<\/span> gate, which leads\nto the bridge seen in Artsy-Fartsy 4<\/span><\/i> above.)<\/p>\n\n

Back outside the gardens and into the public square of the shrine, there were some fluffy\npink “trees” that I briefly<\/span> considered making into a “What am I?” Quiz...<\/p>\n\n

I decided against making it a quiz because those who knew what it was\nwould recognize it immediately, and those who didn't would never be able to guess.<\/p>\n\n

They're twigs with papers tied on like leaves...<\/p>\n\n

These are common at shrines, although normally they're white and on\nstrings strung between two posts. These were apparently set up specially for the cherry-blossom season;\nthe normal white ones on string were nearby.<\/p>\n\n

It's my understanding that individuals buy the papers for some\nsmall amount (a buck<\/span> or five) and writes a wish<\/span> on them before tying them\nto the string.<\/strike> (Update:<\/b> I finally<\/span> asked Fumie about these;\nthey're called Omikuji<\/i><\/a>, and are fortunes\/predictions. You pay a<\/span>\nfew bucks to get a random<\/span> one, and if it's good you take it with you. If\nbad, you tie it to the string, leaving your bad fortune behind.)<\/p>\n\n

I'm not sure what happens after that, but it wouldn't surprise me if\nthey were later subject to a Shinto<\/span> rite involving fire, such as those\ndescribed in “Intense Burn: Shinto Rite at the Heian Shrine<\/a>” and\n“Rare\nShinto Shrine-Closing Ceremony<\/a>”.<\/p>\n\n

These kinds of papers have been seen before on my blog – likely several\ntimes – but the only one I can<\/span> find are some green ones at an\nout-of-the-way shrine in Kibune<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
