On our way back from our short day trip to Awaji Island last week\n(about which I posted<\/span> lotsa' flower pictures here<\/a> and\nhere<\/a>), we stopped by the highway rest stop just south\nof the big Akashi-Straights bridge. I wrote<\/span> about the\nrest stop before in Heavy Lifting: Supporting the Longest Suspension Bridge in the World<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

This time it was dark, and the Ferris wheel (“the largest at a highway<\/span> rest stop in Japan! if not the world!”)\nwas lit up with pure green floodlights that made a dizzying<\/span> sight...<\/p>\n\n

The “dizzying” came not from its height (it's not really very tall), but\nfrom the plethora of green photons flooding your retina. Our brains<\/span> aren't\nset up to handle this situation well, and it was somewhat disorienting and\nsurreal.<\/p>\n\n\n

Unfortunately, cameras aren't set up to handle this situation, either. As I lamented<\/span> in Why Does “Brightness” Wash\nColors to White?<\/a>, colors start to get washed out to white as their\nintensity increases. Other than the lights illuminating the sign and\nentrance area, there wasn't anything at all white about the light in the\npictures above. The Ferris<\/span> wheel was intense, absolutely pure green<\/b>\nwithout any hint of “washing out” or fading or white. As such, these\npictures (which are pathetic on a photographic<\/span> plane to begin with) give no\nreal sense for the experience.<\/p>\n\n

For the same reason that photos of the green Ferris wheel don't come out\npure, intense green, the lights on the bridge don't come out in their\nproper colors. I run into<\/span> this problem often, and I don't<\/span> understand why\ntools like Lightroom can't address it. For example, consider the “Extremely Blue\nLight Display<\/a>” that I posted<\/span> a year<\/span> ago. The pure blue<\/span> got “blown out”\nto white, but spending some time in Photoshop, I was able<\/span> to finagle a more<\/span>\nrealistic representation, as seen in the first image on this\npost<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

I continue to be impressed by the low-light capabilities of the\nNikon D700<\/a>, and surprised by the low-shutter-speed abilities of my hands<\/a>. The picture<\/span> above was handheld, freestanding, in a moving,<\/span> swinging Ferris-wheel car.\nAnthony's head is fuzzy because he moved during the glacial 1\/8-second\nexposure. Nothing is really sharp and photographically speaking the picture is\nas bad as the others, but I think<\/span> it adds to the story, and that it can even exist\nis an amazing part of the story.<\/p>\n\n

When we were done with the ride, I tried<\/span> taking a shot<\/span> of the bridge from the ground...<\/p>\n\n

The lights on the bridge often changed, and were not necessarily always\nthe same across the whole length. But I never<\/span> actually saw the lights\nchange.... we would just suddenly realize that they were different. The lights<\/span> likely slowly morphed, making for an interesting effect over time.\nUnfortunately, whatever colors they were, they come out as white in a photograph.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

After being around the intense green for a while,<\/span> I found<\/span> it interesting\nto realize that it started to not feel so intense. As our brain<\/span> got used to\nit, it started to inch toward doing what it does for most ambient light: interpret it as\nbeing white<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

Before I left, I tried<\/span> taking some shots that might be good for a “What am I?”\nQuiz<\/a>, but as yesterday's quiz<\/a> made clear, I didn't<\/span> come up with\nanything challenging. (It was even less challenging if you clicked on the\n“nearby\nphotos<\/a>” link under the picture, and saw the big Ferris wheel pop\nup.)<\/p>\n\n

While Fumie ran into the rest-stop stores for some shopping, Anthony and\nI played<\/span> catch a bit.<\/span> When Mommy returned, he was apparently still in a\nbaseball<\/span> mood, and showed Mommy his moves...<\/p>\n\n

Those familiar with baseball will see that stance as a first<\/span> class\npitcher's windup. In this case<\/span> it's entirely (and unexpectedly)\ncoincidental. He has no<\/span> idea what he's doing, which makes this snapshot all\nthe more precious.<\/p>\n\n

As for the look of the picture, that picture happened to be up on the\nscreen when Fumie asked me about a photographer<\/span> she'd seen on TV\nwhose style she really liked, and so I started<\/span> futzing with the controls\nand presets in Lightroom to show how that style could be mimicked digitally. The style<\/span> here is not one she asked about, but is one I happened<\/span> upon that\nI like<\/span> for an otherwise drab presentation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
