They're\nsome cherry blossoms that were overhanging our car in the parking lot of <span class='nobr'>a\nrestaurant<\/span> on Awaji Island. <span class='nobr'>The image<\/span> has some strange artifacts that I'm\nat <span class='nobr'>a loss<\/span> to explain, so thought I'd ask whether anyone understands their\nsource.<\/p>\n\n<p>Here are two full-resolution crops &ndash; one from near the center, and\nanother from left of center &ndash; that show some odd haloes around some\nitems, but not around others...<\/p>\n\n<div class='ic'><a href=\"\/i\/JF7_014985.jpg\"\n><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JF7_014985c_sm.jpg\" width=\"684\" height=\"455\"\nalt=\"Awaji, Hyogo, Japan -- Copyright 2009 Jeffrey Friedl, https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/\"\nid=\"i014985c\"\ntitle=\"Awaji, Hyogo, Japan -- Copyright 2009 Jeffrey Friedl, https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/\"\/><\/a>\n<\/div>\n\n<div class='ic'><a href=\"\/i\/JF7_014985.jpg\"\n><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/JF7_014985d_sm.jpg\" width=\"684\" height=\"455\"\nalt=\"Awaji, Hyogo, Japan -- Copyright 2009 Jeffrey Friedl, https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/\"\nid=\"i014985d\"\ntitle=\"Awaji, Hyogo, Japan -- Copyright 2009 Jeffrey Friedl, https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/\"\/><\/a>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>Clicking on any of these images brings up the <a href=\"\/i\/JF7_014985.jpg\" class='quiet'>full-resoltion 4,256 &times; 2,832 pixel image<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<p>These kind of effects are often the result of heavy-handed post\nprocessing.... adding too much fill light, or tweaking the luminosity or\nsaturation of the background, for example, but none of that went on here. <span class='nobr'>The image<\/span> and crops here are just as loaded in Lightroom without any\npost-processing whatsoever.<\/p>\n\n<p>(Actually, while wondering whether the effects were influenced by the\ncamera-calibration setting, <span class='nobr'>I tried<\/span> several. None seemed to have any impact\nthe strange effect, but <span class='nobr'>I preferred<\/span> the &#8220;Camera Vivid&#8221; calibration for this\none, so did leave it at that setting for these examples.)<\/p>\n\n<p>I also checked the full-resolution jpeg <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/2006-12-08\/303\" class='quiet'>embedded within\nthe raw file<\/a>, as well as <span class='nobr'>a simple<\/span> conversion of the raw data with <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/www.cybercom.net\/~dcoffin\/dcraw\/\" class='quiet'>dcraw<\/a>, and\nfound no differences, so it's certain that the effects were created in\ncamera.<\/p>\n\n<p>Camera shake could cause artifacts like this, but in that case <span class='nobr'>I would<\/span>\nexpect the odd effect to be uniform across the image. Subject shake could\naccount for localized effects, but in the branch crop, for example, it's\nmuch more pronounced on one side of the branch than the other, which rules\nout that the branch was shaking really really fast (the shutter speed is\n1\/400th of <span class='nobr'>a second<\/span>).<\/p>\n\n<p>I also wondered for a bit whether it might be some kind of hiccup with\nthe lens' VR mechanism, but like camera shake, <span class='nobr'>I'd think<\/span> that would affect\nall areas of the frame equally.<\/p>\n\n<p>I'm at a total loss to explain this, and find myself at the point of\nwondering whether there's such <span class='nobr'>a thing<\/span> as translucent bark.
