(It turns out it was <span class='nobr'>a common<\/span> upper-respiratory infection, for which antibiotics seem to be working).<\/li>\n   <li>It was shorts-and-T-shirt weather, the first such day this year.<\/li>\n   <li>It was the first day in ages where no school event was scheduled or on the immediate horizon.<\/li>\n <\/ul>\n\n\n<p>We celebrated by venturing out to <span class='nobr'>a place<\/span> we'd heard of but had never\nbeen, <span class='nobr'>a small<\/span> (180-acre) 30-year-old man-made island in the south of Lake\nBiwa with the imposing name <i>yabasekihantou<\/i> (<a\nhref=\"http:\/\/ja.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%E7%9F%A2%E6%A9%8B%E5%B8%B0%E5%B8%86%E5%B3%B6\"\n\n    ><span class='nobr'>\u77e2\u6a4b\u5e30\u5e06\u5cf6<\/span><\/a> &ndash; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.shiganogesui.jp\/annai\/konan\/koen.html\">website<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n<p>Perhaps a third of the island is taken up by <span class='nobr'>a sewage<\/span> treatment plant,\nand the rest is for recreation... <span class='nobr'>a huge<\/span> playground, golf, soccer,\ncampgrounds, parks, etc. <span class='nobr'>It's quite<\/span> pleasant.
