Having used the torii<\/i> from Takashima's Shirohige Shrine in two previous<\/a> posts<\/a>, I thought<\/span> I should<\/span>\nat least provide some context for the scene.<\/p>\n\n

The shrine is tucked in a narrow strip of land sandwiched between the\nmountains and Lake Biwa. I'm sure the<\/span> location seemed appropriate when it\nwas founded (the main hall was built in 1605), prior to cars and trains and\nheavy weekend traffic, but now it's got a road<\/span> passing between it and the\nlake.<\/p>\n\n

A hundred years ago there was perhaps a footpath<\/span> running along the lake,\nbut by 50 years ago there was a road<\/span> and a train<\/span> track pushing through (the\nlatter can be seen in a photo<\/span> on the shrine's\nwebsite<\/a>). The train<\/span> has now been rerouted through a tunnel,<\/span> and the\nroad widened.<\/p>\n\n

Having been on my way to Anthony's first\nskiing experience<\/a>, I didn't<\/span> stop to explore the area at all, but from the signs\nI recall,<\/span> there are paths up into the mountains that seemed interesting.<\/p>\n\n

I didn't enter the shrine grounds, but did take a moment<\/span> to snap a\npicture<\/span> or two of these big bundles of straw hanging from a big<\/span> straw rope\nslung across the landside gate.<\/p>\n\n
