On my way to see Anthony's first ski experience<\/a> earlier in the month, I stopped<\/span> by the Shirohige Shrine on the waters of Lake Biwa, in Takashima\nJapan, to take a few<\/span> pictures. I posted<\/span> a “washed out” picture of the\nshrine's main gate in the middle of the water that I'll repeat here:<\/p>\n\n

I really like the washed-out effect in this shot, even though it's the\nexact opposite of what I generally<\/span> try to get. I usually<\/span> try to get the\nsunburst streaming in, like in these shots from my blog archive:\nKouri Island\n(Okinawa)<\/a> and Midwest America\n(Ohio)<\/a> and Shogunzuka (Kyoto)<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

I'd like to say that the effect seen in this washed-out shot was one\nthat I crafted<\/span> using skill, experience, and natural talent, but it was due\nto none of those. Rather, it's the result of taking a high<\/span>-speed burst of\n“bracketed” exposures, just to see what would happen.<\/p>\n\n

I told the camera to capture as quickly as it could a wide<\/span> breadth of\nexposures from way overexposed to way underexposed, and in less than 1.5\nseconds, it took 8 shots: the most overexposed one allows more than\n120× the light of the most underexposed one.<\/p>\n\n
