Yesterday morning, Anthony was all excited to tell me some “good news\nfor everyone!”. He had discovered<\/span> adult teeth poking out behind his\nfront-lower incisors. Many of his classmates have already started losing\ntheir baby teeth – a big<\/span> step toward being oniichan<\/i> (a “big\nkid”) – so he's been eagerly awaiting the event.<\/p>\n\n

For my part, I was shocked<\/span> at how far behind his baby teeth the adult\nteeth had come in. I don't<\/span> know what's supposed to be normal, but it just\nfelt very wrong. I didn't<\/span> let on to him about that worry, of course, so I\nshared<\/span> in his excitement. He was also<\/span> excited because he had heard about a\nreally<\/span> cool dentist with chocolate-flavored medicine, and you can watch a\nTV<\/span> on the ceiling, and “it doesn't hurt at all”. He was positively<\/span>\ngiddy<\/i> at the thought of visiting such a fun<\/span> place.<\/p>\n\n

Fumie and I were positively giddy that he wasn't screaming and crying.<\/p>\n\n

That dentist was closed yesterday, but this morning, Fumie was able to\nfinagle a reservation<\/span> for this afternoon, and so we went.<\/p>\n\n

The questionnaire Fumie filled out when we got there had all the standard\nnew-patient questions, and also a bunch<\/span> like the name of his teacher,\nschool, friends, favorite foods, hobbies, etc. This was made available to\nthe doctor when Anthony was brought in and was actually set on Anthony's\nchest so that the doctor could see it at a glance<\/span> while working on Anthony,\nallowing him to chat up Anthony with familiar, calming things.<\/p>\n\n

Just half an hour later, Anthony was done. He was a<\/span> bit scared about\nwhat had gone on, but much of it was likely because he didn't know what had\ngone on: he didn't realize that his teeth had been pulled until I told<\/span>\nhim.<\/p>\n\n

I don't remember what it was like when I was<\/span> a kid,<\/span> but in Japan, losing\nyour baby teeth is a huge<\/span> moment of pride for the kid... a sign<\/span> that\nthey're growing up. Everyone was congratulating him.<\/p>\n\n

I brought some of my American culture: after clearing it with the nurse, I promised<\/span> Anthony ice cream.... loads of ice cream. That helped later as\nthe anesthesia started to wear off during the drive home.<\/p>\n\n
