As I wrote the other day, Anthony went skiing for the\nfirst time<\/a> this weekend. In between<\/span> taking 500+ photos of him and his\nYMCA friends, I took the<\/span> occasional generic ski-slope shot....<\/p>\n\n

Imagine that you're at a table in a library<\/span> and the person next to you\ngets your attention, indicates that your pencil has rolled a bit<\/span> over into\ntheir space, and kindly pushes it back toward you. You might<\/span> mumble a word<\/span>\nof thanks, take your pencil, and not give it further thought because it's a\ntrivial<\/span> matter not worthy of further thought. Okay, so remember that level\nof concern (or, in this case, lack of concern) as I tell<\/span> a short<\/span>\nstory...<\/p>\n\n

So, I was snappin<\/span>' shots of Anthony and friends like film was free, and\nfrom behind I heard<\/span> a crying<\/span> that, as a parent,<\/span> well.... I knew needed<\/span> my\nattention. I found<\/span> a young<\/span> boy wandering around alone, crying, searching\nfor his parents. He eventually<\/span> said he was three years old, but it must\nhave been just barely... he was young.<\/p>\n\n

The kid says he wants to find his parents by himself, so he resists\ntaking my hand to go look together. I'm faced<\/span> with a dilemma<\/span>: do I respect<\/span>\nhis three-year-old wishes, or do I force<\/span> myself upon the situation and take\nhis hand against his will? Remember, I'm a “big scary strange guy” (in\nadult terms, “foreigner”). I don't<\/span> care what the kid thinks, but if I force<\/span>\nthe issue and his folks walk up at the right moment, it would look as if I\nwas<\/span> trying to abduct the kid. Leaving the kid to fend for himself is not an\noption, but how I appear<\/span> to others as I interact<\/span> with him is certainly on\nmy mind.<\/p>\n\n

The kid is wandering around the most crowded area in the whole place\n– in and among the lines for the lift, where no kid his age should be\n– and instead of raising the concern of those in line, he raises\ntheir irritation. (The lines of the lift were literally longer than the\nlift itself, so it's not like I can<\/span> blame them that much.) But as I'm\ntrying to talk to the little boy who is consistently trying to walk away,\none young man, pictured above, stepped out of line to help. I quickly<\/span> explain the situation, he runs to dump his skis somewhere, and returns, all\nthe while the throng of skiers in line pulses forward.<\/p>\n\n

He tries talking to the little boy, but gets the same result I did.<\/span> We consult<\/span> on what to do, and decide to just bring the boy – kicking and\nscreaming if need be – to ski patrol. On the way<\/span> we learn his age and\nname, and so by the time we get to ski patrol we've got enough info for them\nto make an announcement.<\/p>\n\n

More or less, they didn't care. “The parents never listen to the\nannouncements... they never listen”. Well, as a parent,<\/span> I can tell<\/span> you that\nif my child was missing, I'd be ALL<\/span> EARS, so I pushed<\/span> that they make an\nannouncement. Task completed, the young helper disappears, but returns a\nminute<\/span> later having somehow found the kid's dad.<\/p>\n\n

Recall, now, the lack of concern and absent-minded muttered words of\nthanks I described<\/span> before... that's how this dad was. Sure, probability is\nhigh that someone would find the kid and take care of him before he fell\noff a cliff<\/span> or froze to death behind a snowbank,<\/span> so it's not like we saved\nhis life or anything, but geez, this dad showed no appreciation. He just muttered<\/span> a half<\/span>-hearted thanks as he went to fetch his kid.<\/p>\n\n

Sigh.<\/p>\n\n

I thanked the young helper (he must have been about 14 or so), snapped his picture,\nand returned to Anthony and his friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
