On my way up to the ski area for Anthony's first\nski experience<\/a>, I stopped<\/span> by the Shirohige\nShrine<\/a> on the shores of Lake Biwa<\/a>\n(Japan's largest lake, about a third<\/span> larger than Lake Tahoe). It was somewhat<\/span>\ndark with a cloud<\/span> mostly in front of the sun, with nice streamers of light\nemanating from the edge of the cloud, but overexposing the frame gives this\ninteresting result.<\/p>\n\n

I have no idea why the shrine is named Shirohige<\/i>, which means “white beard”.\n(UPDATE:<\/b> it's apparently related to how a white beard indicates longevity, and perhaps wiseness)<\/p>\n\n

Okay, I looked<\/span> it up... the name is meant to imply longevity, at least\naccording to its\nWikipedia entry<\/a>, which also notes that it's the oldest shrine in Shiga\n(one of the prefectures that neighbors Kyoto). It's the head<\/span> of the 292\nshirohige<\/i> shrines in Japan.<\/p>\n\n

I'd not heard of this shrine, except that we passed it last year on the\nway to an out-of-the-way\ncafe<\/a> with tasty pizza. Remembering it when I took<\/span> the same route this\nlast Sunday, I stopped<\/span> by for some pictures.<\/p>\n\n

I know of one other shrine gate in the water, the much larger, much more\nfamous gate\nof the Itsukushima Shrine<\/a> on Miyajima<\/a>, not far from\nHiroshima.<\/p>\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
