Continuing from yesterday's post, Japan's Coming of Age\nDay<\/i> Holiday Spectacle<\/a>, here are some portrait-type shots I was<\/span> able\nto get. Let me reiterate<\/span>, though, that I was<\/span> scrambling to get anything,\nhaving gotten there and hour and a half<\/span> after the ceremonies had ended, and\ndidn't have time to scout locations that would give me both a good<\/span>\nbackground and steady stream of photographic fodder. So, I got what<\/span> I\ncould,<\/span> where I could,<\/span> when I could.<\/span><\/p>\n\n

I had noticed a sliver of light from the setting sun make its way\nbetween buildings, and saw this girl approaching, so waited a second<\/span> for\nher to enter the light and got this shot in passing.<\/p>\n\n

These white stoles are, apparently, somewhat a symbol<\/span> for the day, like\na white<\/span> dress is for a wedding.<\/span> They go along with the formal furisode<\/i><\/a> kimono\nthat (according to the current Wikipedia article) \"signifies that she is\nboth single and a legal<\/span> adult, and thus available for marriage.\" I doubt<\/span> it\ntruly means that for many these days, but nevertheless, it's a monumental<\/span>\nmoment in one's life. (We don't have anything like it in The States,\nalthough a distant<\/span> second might be wearing a cap<\/span>-and-gown at college\ngraduation.)<\/p>\n\n

I have occasionally seen these white stoles worn by guests at a wedding,<\/span>\nbut for the most part, I associate<\/span> them with this Coming of Age Day<\/i>\nholiday, and as such, I associate<\/span> them with Tammy Faye makeup, garish\naccessories, and big big<\/b> hair. Yuck.<\/p>\n\n

I wish I would have gotten a better shot of the lady pictured above,\nbecause she's one of the few who doesn't fall into that category.<\/p>\n\n

It doesn't apply here, but I couldn't<\/span> think of anything better for a caption,<\/span> since I'd used “Big Hair” already, yesterday<\/span>\n<\/div>\n\n

With the mountains in the east basking in the glow from sunset, I camped<\/span> for a while<\/span> at a spot<\/span> that gave me that nice background with relatively few\ndistractions. Like a spider<\/span> waiting for lunch, I snapped<\/span> photos of those\nwho entered the area.<\/p>\n\n

The lady above was a common sight, because just about everyone had a\ncell<\/span> phone out, for its camera or for making a call<\/span> or checking messages. The event<\/span> had ended a while<\/span> back, so many of those remaining were likely\nstill coordinating their way home.<\/p>\n\n\n

These three friends each gave immediate vibes as to their personalities,\nand each was different from the other. The girl was<\/span> laid back, a friend<\/span> to\neveryone, and happy just to be happy. If I didn<\/span>'t have my hands full with\nthe camera (and if I didn't<\/span> recoil from their cigarettes), I'm sure she<\/span>\nwould have offered me a drink.<\/span> The man in<\/span> the suit (a most<\/span>-excellent suit,\nI'll note) just wanted to ham things up. So long as<\/span> I was<\/span> around, he was\ndoing silly things. Maybe he just wanted to please?<\/p>\n\n

The man in the formal Japanese ware was the tough one, and when he saw\nme he walked over directly to me with a look<\/span> that was intended to intimidate\nme. I suspect<\/span> he was just honing his skills to see what kind of reaction he\ncould get, but I wasn't<\/span> playing along because I'd already established eye\ncontact with the girl, who communicated a “join in, the more the merrier”\nattitude. I told the<\/span> tough man to go back with his friends so that I could<\/span>\ntake their picture, alright?<\/i>, and he readily complied.<\/p>\n\n

They were accommodating (even the tough guy) and I got<\/span> more interesting\nshots, but their cigarettes drove me on to more breathable pastures.<\/p>\n\n

These guys were partying in the parking lot of the convenience store\nnext to my place. The guy pictured<\/span> was drunk, but was also pretending to be\nmore drunk than he really was. Maybe. Hamming it up after I took<\/span> a group<\/span>\nphoto (the opening photo of yesterday's post<\/a>), he\nfound himself on the ground. I have a<\/span> photo of him sitting pensively on the\nground, as if he's considering where to aim when he throws up, but I prefer<\/span>\nto believe that he was joking around, so am sharing this smiling shot of\nhim getting up.<\/p>\n\n

After he got up, he handed me a disposable<\/span> film camera and asked with\nslurred speech for me to take their photo. Another guy produced a second<\/span>\ncamera, so I set<\/span> mine down and took a couple<\/span> of shots with theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
