The other day I posted a tree\/island silhouette<\/a>\nthat I took<\/span> on our recent jaunt to Okinawa. The shot was<\/span> taken in the rain\nunder a gloomy<\/span> overcast, near dusk. Because I was<\/span> exposing for the\nsilhouette, I could<\/span> get by with a relatively<\/span> undemanding exposure that I\ncould<\/span> have achieved even with my old D200...<\/p>\n\n

I took the shot from a beach near the road, and while returning to the\nparking lot in the increasing rain, I noticed<\/span> an Okinawan grave tucked\naway deep in a clump<\/span> of trees, nestled in the darkness at the side of a hill.<\/span>...<\/p>\n\n

The picture is not going to win any prizes, but the fact that I could<\/span>\nget anything in that situation is absolutely astounding. Prior to the D700, I would<\/span> have never even considered<\/i> attempting a shot<\/span> without a\ntripod<\/span>: the 100% chance of failure was not worth the calories it would cost\nto press the shutter button.<\/p>\n\n

The D700's low-light abilities are amazing (see “Impossible Photography: No\nLight, No Tripod, No Hope<\/a>”) but everything\nhas limits, and in the murkiness under the trees against the side of the\nhill, it was too dark, even at ISO 6400. Still, it was now in the ballpark\nof hope, so I gave<\/span> it a try<\/span> – handheld freestanding at 1\/5th of a\nsecond<\/span> – and got acceptable results. Amazing.<\/p>\n\n

It was actually darker than it looks in the photo, but the D700\nsometimes meters a bit<\/span> on the bright side. I actually<\/span> had to lower the\nexposure 2\/3rd of a stop<\/span> in Lightroom just to get it this dark. If I actually<\/span> lowered it enough so that it reflected reality, it'd be too dark\nto really see much, so what you see here is the reality\/practicality\nbalance I decided<\/span> on.<\/p>\n\n\n

Anyway, people have been living on these islands for 6,000+ years, so if\nyou drive in rural areas you'll find these graves all over the place,\nalone or in small groups. This particular one is on a small<\/span> (mall-sized)\nisland that a road<\/span> runs through (it's part of a bridge<\/span>\/island link to a\nmuch<\/span> larger, populated island further offshore). Prior to the bridge\/road\ncoming through, it would have been isolated from the Okinawan mainland and\ntoo small to make travel to it worthwhile, so would have been supremely\nserene.<\/p>\n\n
