{"id":110,"date":"2005-12-09T12:33:28","date_gmt":"2005-12-09T03:33:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2005-12-09\/110"},"modified":"2006-02-04T23:42:27","modified_gmt":"2006-02-04T14:42:27","slug":"photoshop-and-japanese-new-years-cards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/regex.info\/blog\/2005-12-09\/110","title":{"rendered":"Photoshop and Japanese New-Year&#8217;s Cards"},"content":{"rendered":"\n\n\n\n<p>\n\nThere's a strong tradition in Japan to keep in touch with friends and\nacquaintances at least once <span class='nobr'>a year<\/span> by sending a &#8220;nengajou&#8221; <span class='nobr'>(\u5e74\u8cc0\u72b6),<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a New<\/span>\nYear's postcard. <span class='nobr'>The Japanese<\/span> Post office holds them as they're mailed, and\ndelivers them en masse on New Year's morning. <span class='nobr'>The average<\/span> family might get\n<span class='nobr'>a bundle<\/span> of 50-150, while someone high in business or politics could well\nget thousands, <span class='nobr'>I suppose.<\/span> (Someone like me who is absolutely horrible at\nkeeping in touch gets just <span class='nobr'>a few,<\/span> although it's gotten better due to\nFumie's more socially-adept influence.)\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nOne side of the postcard is generally reserved for the Post Office, while\nthe other usually has some kind of photo or design, along with the names of\nhousehold members and ages of any kids, and <span class='nobr'>a generic<\/span> seasonal phrase (&#8220;<span class='nobr'>A\nHappy<\/span> New Year&#8221; is common). Since the average family sends 50-150, it's <span class='nobr'>a\nlot<\/span> of work, so personal notes are generally kept very short.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nAs with families preparing Christmas Cards in America, it can be <span class='nobr'>a big<\/span> deal\nto get just the right photo to put on the card. <span class='nobr'>A friend<\/span> recently took\nadvantage of an occasion on which everyone (including their exquisitely\ncute two-year-old) got dressed up and visited <span class='nobr'>a shrine,<\/span> to take some photos\nthat might be appropriate for their New-Year's card. Unfortunately, none of\nthem came out well. There was something wrong with every single shot --\nusually someone was blinking, looking the wrong way, had their head cut\noff, etc.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nThe photo below is one that they generally liked, except that it doesn't\nreflect the mom's normally-cheery face.
