I took the shot above while exploring a small<\/span> neighborhood near my place\nthis morning. I'll have plenty of interesting things to share from this\nmorning's adventure, but for today, just the picture above (did you see the\ntiny, curious dog?) and a few<\/span> uninteresting things...<\/p>\n\n

I posted the other day about the Shinto evergreen\/tangerine\ndisplay<\/a> that people adorn their cars with during the New Year season.\nThose displays are also often found above entrances to homes, and with the\npost from the other day fresh in my mind, I took the<\/span> opportunity to snap a\nfew<\/span> pictures of these displays when I came<\/span> across them during this morning's adventures.<\/p>\n\n

Here's one on a fairly modern house...<\/p>\n\n

Here's another, on a large, old house...<\/p>\n\n

As you can see from the wide shot above, the house is old enough to have\nexternal knob wiring (like\nthis place<\/a>), leading me to suspect that the house was built prior to\nelectricity being available.<\/p>\n\n

Also of note is that this particular house is about as “middle of\nnowhere” that you can get less than 200 meters from a major<\/span> thoroughfare. To get to<\/span> this house, you have to leave the main road via a small<\/span> side road\nthat heads up a hill,<\/span> then take an even smaller, steeper road that juts off\nalmost 180 degrees back toward the left, then wind your way a bit<\/span> up and\ndown and around the side of a mountain,<\/span> until you come to a thin<\/span> paved\noffshoot barely wide enough for a scooter,<\/span> but steep enough that you'll\nhave a second<\/span> thought about using one. At one point<\/span> this offshoot does a\nhairpin<\/span> turn that's sufficiently tight (while still going uphill at a steep<\/span>\nangle) that it's advised to just park and walk the rest of the way, then\ncontinue on the path up a steep<\/span> hill until it makes a 90<\/span>-degree turn, the\npath flattens out, and then ends.<\/p>\n\n

So, now that I have<\/span> a “doorway” theme going in\nthis post, I'll share two more doorways that I came<\/span> across this morning.. The first<\/span> has pretty much the thinnest door I've ever seen:<\/p>\n\n\n
