For reasons I've yet to fully investigate, it's common around this time\nof year to see vehicles in Japan adorned with some kind of display\nincorporating twine, an evergreen twig, white strips of paper, and\nsometimes a tangerine.<\/span> Just based on what else I know<\/span> of Japan, I'm sure it<\/span>'s related to Shinto, because the white strips of paper are usually the\nzigzag streamers used\nin Shinto rituals<\/a>. It's probably<\/span> mostly just a non<\/span>-religious custom\nnow, having evolved from a religious<\/span> purification ritual<\/a>\nof some sort. That's my guess.<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, the picture above is of an old truck on Kakeroma-jima Island\nthat I took<\/span> on our trip to\nAmami<\/a> a year<\/span> ago. The plastic<\/span> bag used to protect the sprigs\/tangerine\ncompletely destroys the visual aesthetic, so I'm guessing this one is\nactually more ritual<\/i> and less custom<\/i>.<\/p>\n\n

“BOSS” is a brand of Suntory ice coffee (for which Tommy Lee Jones is a\npitchman<\/span><\/a>). The yellow<\/span> sticker in the corner of the vending machine says\n“Value! 100 Yen. Only in Kyushu” (Kyushu being the region of Japan that Amami\nis part of).<\/p>\n\n
