Anthony and <span class='nobr'>I took<\/span> <span class='nobr'>a long<\/span> walk last week with\nKatsunori Shimada, my good friend of 10+ years. <span class='nobr'>We went to<\/span> the Kyoto Biwako\nCanal Museum (about the canal built in the 1880s that brought water and\nJapan's first electricity to Kyoto), then up the Kyoto Incline and into the\nmountains and temples and paths back behind it. (Five pages of pictures <a\nhref=\"http:\/\/pic.regex.info\/amf\/2005-11-23\">here<\/a>.)\n\n<\/p>\n\n<table border=\"0\" cellspacing=\"0\" cellpadding=\"0\"><tr\nvalign=\"top\"><td><p>Our day was mostly uncrowded until during our return we\ndescended from the mountains into the rear corner of Nanzenji <span class='nobr'>(\u5357\u7985\u5bfa<\/span> &mdash; the <a\nhref=\"\/blog\/other-writings\/a-visit-to-nanzen-temple-kyoto-japan\/\">Nanzen\nTemple<\/a>).\n\n<\/p><p> There, it was an absolute mad house of tourists jockeying for\nposition to take photos of the stunning foliage. <span class='nobr'>I live pretty<\/span> close, and\nso had known for some time by the mind-numbing traffic what to expect,\nwhich is why Nanzenji was <span class='nobr'>a path<\/span> to get home and not our actual\ndestination. <span class='nobr'>The photo<\/span> at right (of part of the aqueduct bridge,\nlengthwise) shows some of the crowd even at this remote corner of the\ntemple area.\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nStill, Shimada-san was able to take the photo above, which <span class='nobr'>I think<\/span> is just fantastic. <span class='nobr'>It'd make a<\/span> wonderful computer desktop background.\n\n<\/p><\/td><td width=\"10\"><br\/><\/td><td>\n\n<a href=\"\/i\/pic\/2005-11-23_13:04.07__230031.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/pic\/2005-11-23_13:04.07__230031__4.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\"\nalt=\"Fall foilage at the base of the aqueduct bridge in the\nNanzen Temple grounds, Kyoto Japan\"\nid=\"i2005_11_23_13_04_07__230031__4\"\ntitle=\"Fall foilage at the base of the aqueduct bridge in the\nNanzen Temple grounds, Kyoto Japan\"\/><\/a>\n\n<\/td><\/tr><\/table>\n\n<br\/>\n\n<table style=\"border: 1px solid #CCC; padding: 10px\">\n<tr valign=\"top\"><td>\n<a href=\"\/i\/pic\/2005-11-23_12:22.53__230023.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/pic\/2005-11-23_12:22.53__230023__4.jpg\" width=\"512\" height=\"384\"\nid=\"i2005_11_23_12_22_53__230023__4\"\/><\/a><\/td><td>\n\n<p>This temple in the mountains behind the Kyoto Incline was just as\nbeautiful as Nanzenji, but wonderfully uncrowded.<\/p>\n\n<\/td><\/tr><\/table>\n\n<br\/>\n\n<table style=\"border: 1px solid #CCC; padding: 10px\">\n<tr valign=\"top\"><td>\n\n<p><big>The only way to travel!<\/big>\n\n<\/p><p>\n\nThe paths through the mountains in this area are fairly easy, and even\nAnthony could walk most of the way (what <span class='nobr'>a trooper!<\/span>) Toward the end, <span class='nobr'>I carried<\/span> him on my shoulders for <span class='nobr'>a while,<\/span> and then he got <span class='nobr'>a special<\/span> treat: <span class='nobr'>a\npiggyback<\/span> ride from Shimada-san.\n\n<\/p><\/td><td>\n\n<a href=\"\/i\/pic\/2005-11-23_13:06.30__04024.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/i\/pic\/2005-11-23_13:06.30__04024__4.jpg\" width=\"290\" height=\"387\"\nid=\"i2005_11_23_13_06_30__04024__4\"\/><\/a> <\/td><\/tr><\/table>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> It's fall in Kyoto and that means lots of little trips to see the magnificent foliage.
