I made the 10-minute scooter ride this morning to Kyoto's Yamashina\nWard, to explore what I thought<\/span> was a mountain<\/span> road that I discovered<\/span>\nyesterday with Google Earth. Sadly, it turns out that the road is not open\nto the public. Still, I came away<\/span> with a few<\/span> nice shots from the\nmountain-village area just prior to the gate.<\/p>\n\n

This is all very close to the concrete jungle that is Kyoto... perhaps\nhalf a mile<\/span> (it's two miles from my place), but as I've mentioned so many\ntimes (especially\nhere<\/a>), once you get into the mountains, you feel like the city is a\nmillion<\/span> miles away.<\/p>\n\n

I'm not really happy with this last shot because it makes it look more\nlike piled up debris than a nice<\/span> fence, but it's a nice<\/span> fence. It's sort of<\/span>\na rustic<\/span> version of this\nnice wall at the Giouji Temple<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

At one point I took a wrong turn and took a road<\/span> that slowly morphed\ninto an increasingly rough path up into the mountain. I eventually<\/span> realized\nthat it had become a hiking<\/span> path (one that eventually hooks up to a path<\/span> I've hiked<\/a> up to\nMt. Daimonji). I eventually<\/span> turned around, but not before taking a few<\/span> pictures of\none of the many logs that had fallen across the path-side stream...<\/p>\n\n\n

This particular log, once you got in close, seemed to be a botanical<\/span>\ncity unto its own. I really<\/span> didn't do a good<\/span> job in the few shots I\ntook.<\/span>... I'll have to go back if I ever<\/span> get a good<\/span> macro lens...<\/p>\n\n

After lunch, I happened<\/span> to have the camera with me when I picked<\/span> up\nAnthony from school, and took the opportunity to snap a picture<\/span> of some\nhuge trees in the schoolyard that were pruned to within an inch of their\nlife a month<\/span> or so ago...<\/p>\n\n

I don't know what it is with pruning in Japan, but it seems that they really like to do it<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

These trees are huge... six or eight stories tall. Here's the top 30' or\nso of one of them... (with the sky wildly overexposed, to allow some detail\nin the tree):<\/p>\n\n

The tree is stark enough in the winter even with its branches (see here<\/a>), but at this point it's just a sad<\/span> sight.<\/p>\n\n

I'm still interested in capturing an amazing sunset like the one I saw<\/span> a month<\/span> ago<\/a>,\nbut from the photographically advantageous vantage offered by Shogunzuka<\/a> and its\nsweeping views of Kyoto. Today's late afternoon was overcast with\nabsolutely no promise for a colorful<\/span> sunset, but one doesn't score big by\nwaiting for a sure<\/span> thing, so I again<\/span> slogged up there in hopes I'd be\nsurprised.<\/p>\n\n

As I was walking up to the overlook, a group<\/span> of middle-school girls were\ndoing some kind of jumping play while their taxi driver snapped a picture,<\/span>\nso without breaking my stride I did<\/span> as well. This shot caught them all\nairborne...<\/p>\n\n

The guy at left is the taxi driver, snapping a picture<\/span> of his fare just\nlike the one I featured last\nmonth<\/a> at this same location.<\/p>\n\n

The way the path leading to the overlook is lower than the overlook\nmakes for some nice silhouette opportunities. The shot above<\/span> is sloppy in\nthat respect, but I had<\/span> a nice<\/span> sunset\nsilhouette<\/a> last month, and some nice nighttime silhouettes<\/a>\nlast summer.<\/p>\n\n

The sunset itself was okay... a bit<\/span> nicer than average, perhaps. It was much<\/span> hazier than normal, so the difference made it interesting...<\/p>\n\n

Anthony wanted to take a picture, so I handed<\/span> him my Nikon D700 with the\nhuge Nikkor 70<\/span>-200mm\nf\/2.8<\/a> zoom on it. That much camera in the hands of a six<\/span>-year-old makes\nfor a comical<\/span> sight, but he got a nice<\/span> shot....<\/p>\n\n
