I've posted many times the view of Kyoto from the overlook at Shogunzuka, such as this photo from\na post<\/span> last year<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n

The location I took these shots from is officially part of the\n“Higashiyama Summit Park” (“Higashiyama” – Eastern Mountain –\nbeing the name of the short mountain it's at the top of), but the area is\nbetter known as “Shogunzuka”, a man<\/span>-made mound of some sort dating back to\nthe 700s. It's now part<\/span> of a temple's<\/span> grounds, but I've always just come to\nthe park's public overlook, and have never paid the $5 to enter the temple\ngrounds.<\/p>\n\n

As I mentioned the\nother day<\/a>, I sometimes<\/span> try to zip up to the overlook for the sunset,\nhoping against hope for a photogenic<\/span> view of an amazing sunset<\/a>. So far, no luck.<\/p>\n\n

Although it was mostly overcast and threatening rain today, there were a\nfew<\/span> open spots in the clouds to the west, so I popped<\/span> up. Not much of<\/span> a\nsunset,<\/span> it turned out, but while killing time waiting to see what would\nmaterialize, I wandered<\/span> over to the temple, and then detoured down one of\nthe various hiking trails that dot the area (of which I once wrote a bit<\/span> about<\/a>).\nThis time, though, I realized<\/span> that a trail<\/span> hugged the perimeter of the\ntemple grounds, and taking it, I was amazed<\/span> to find that the grounds were\nmuch larger than I thought,<\/span> and included their own overlook. That's the\nlead photo of this post... the real<\/i> Shogunzuka overlook that I\nnever<\/span> knew existed.<\/p>\n\n

I'll wait for better weather before actually going inside to where I can<\/span>\nenjoy the view from the real Shogunzuka overlook, but the view from the\nhiking trail wasn't too bad, and faced north more than the public lookout. I was able<\/span> to even see the Heian Shrine....<\/p>\n\n

It's similar to the view\nI posted<\/span><\/a> last spring, from a trail<\/span> behind the Westin Miyako Hotel. It turns<\/span> out (looking at Google Maps; see the “full exif &\nmap” link under any photo) that the trail behind the hotel leads\nright up to Shogunzuka where I was<\/span> today. Were I to<\/span> walk that trail back\nhome, I bet I<\/span> could get back to my place from here in less than half an\nhour. I'll have to try it sometime. (Driving, although less direct, takes\nonly five minutes if I hit<\/span> all green lights).<\/p>\n\n

I didn't enter the temple grounds, but they had some nice colorful\nfoliage out front...<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, back to the public overlook, it's too much of a hassle<\/span> to use\nthe correct “Overlook part of the Higashiyama Summit Park”, so I'll still\ncall the it the “Shogunzuka Overlook”. I'm just lazy<\/span> that way.<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, for the record, there wasn't much of a sunset<\/span> at all. It started<\/span> raining as I snapped<\/span> this...<\/p>\n\n
