Well, I seem to<\/span> have come down with a cold,<\/span> and so I spent<\/span> almost all\nday sleeping. Up now at<\/span> midnight with just enough energy to stare blankly\nat the screen, so I'll just post a few<\/span> pictures from yesterday to brighten\nmy day (er, my night) before heading back to bed.<\/p>\n\n\n

The entrance way to the small restaurant next to our place has a tree<\/span>\nthat we can see the top of from our livingroom window, and each year at\nabout this time, it turns all kinds of fiery reds and oranges.<\/p>\n\n

We just see the top, but it's still pretty...<\/p>\n\n

So, yesterday, between taking pictures of\n\n\nKyoto City neutering\ntrees<\/a> and riding through a fall-foliage tunnel<\/a>, I spent<\/span> a few<\/span> minutes to go see the tree up close.<\/p>\n\n\n

When I got down there, I was surprised<\/span> to find that the leaves that I\nthought<\/span> were so fiery red were actually fairly drab, until you got the sun\nbehind them and got a lot<\/span> of light shining through. They transmit<\/i>\nred, but don't reflect it as much. Backlighting is a great<\/span> way to get the\nexcitement from fall colors, whether it's via the sun<\/a> or from high-intensity\nfloodlights<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n

It's on my list of things to do this season to try using a small<\/span>\nhandheld flash (in my case, a Nikon<\/span> SB-800 Speedlight) to backlight.\nEspecially if I can<\/span> use settings that allow the flash to dominate the\nambient light, I suspect<\/span> some really interesting results. We'll see whether the cold\nI've come down with will let me...<\/p>\n\n

Anyway, yesterday, I had the<\/span> sun almost directly behind the leaves, and\nI didn't<\/span> have the lens hood with me, so the result was occasional flare,\nlike the greenish hexagon in the upper-left of the shot above, or the big\nsweeping circle in the first shot.<\/p>\n\n
